Housekeeping • Paperwork- In the folder, please complete all the forms and return them in the folder provided. Home/School Compact- signed by both parent and student • Student handbook- sign/return last page ONLY if you DO NOT want your child’s picture in the paper or yearbook
School calendar • 9 wk grading periods • ELA grades will be combined this year • Progress reports- 1x during 9 wks; sign/return Note holidays, in-service and parent-teacher conference dates- available on the website.
Procedures • Folders- Check your child’s folder DAILY • Homework • Class work • First Bell rings at 7:50 • TARDY bell rings at 8:00 (signed in) • Front doors are locked at 8:00- buzzed in
Attendance • 180 School days- BE HERE! • Tardy= late arrival or early dismissal • 5 tardies = 1 absence • Effects retention of information
READING • 20 minutes per night…WHY? • Brain food • Practice • Reinforce • Improves relationships
ELA - Spelling • Spelling will be individualized. Look for the following to occur: • A pretest will be given on Thursday. • On Friday, the students will create their spelling words from the pretest and individual • spelling list. (This list will come from words missed when they are writing in class.) • The list will be created 3 times. List #1 is on an index card that I will keep. • List #2 will be a take-home list. List #3 will be kept in the students binder at school. • Final spelling test will be on Wednesday of the following week. • Students will have between 10 and 20 words each week. • Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
ELA - Writing • Increased writing standards • Pretest in August and Post-test in November • First concentration is on informational writing • In November/December, the shift will change to opinion writing. • Expected to read 2 different texts on the same topic and be able to • summarize and compare the texts.
