Units of Measure Section 1.1 Metric (SI) Units
1.1 Metric (SI) Units • SI units – an international system of measurement that is based on “metric” units. • Metric units – units that are scaled by factors of ten. • Kilo – metric prefix that means 1,000 times larger than the base unit. • Centi – metric prefix that means one-hundredth, or in other words, 100 times smaller than the base unit.
1.1 Metric (SI) Units • Milli – metric prefix that means one-thousandth, or 1,000 times smaller than the base unit. • Micro – metric prefix that means one-millionth, or 1 million (1,000,000) times smaller than the base unit. • Nano – metric prefix that means one-billionth, or 1 billion (1,000,000,000) times smaller than the base unit. • Meter – the standard SI unit for measuring length.
1.1 Metric (SI) Units • Gram – the standard SI unit for measuring mass • Liter - a common metric unit for measuring volume
What are Units? • Units give numbers meaning. • If someone said, “Give me five,” they would probably slap your hand. • If you asked for eight, they would probably ask, “Eight of what?” • This what is the unit. • Other examples of units include: feet, pounds, degrees, etc.
Metric (or SI) Units • In the US, we are more familiar with English units: feet, inches, miles, gallons, pounds, degrees Farenheit. • Scientists around the world have agreed on an international system of measurements called the Système International d’Unités, or the International System of Units, abbreviated as SI Units.
Metric (or SI) Units • SI units have a base unit name, like meter for length and gram for mass. • Also have metric prefixes that represent factors of ten.
