Te, Coma (ART) From: Sent: To: Subject: San Francisco Health Service System <HSS.Noreply@sfgov.org> Monday, May 2, 2022 11:31 AM Te, Coma (ART) We're Here for You: Mental Health Awareness Month Mayor London Breed PSA on Mental Health Awareness Month May is Mental Health Awareness Month Nearly 1 in 5 American adults in California experiences a mental health condition that impacts them at home and at work. 1
Approximately 1 in 6 youth in California experienced some form of mental illness. During the pandemic, about 30.7% of adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. A survey conducted by WTW Well-being Diagnostic in October of 2021 found that 86% of Employees said that mental health and dealing with burnout and stress are a priority. Each week during the month of May there will be a focused topic on mental health, providing both information and resources. What is Mental Health and Why Does It Matter? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act and can affect our physical health also. It helps determine how we deal with stress, relate to others, make choices and how we function at work and in our personal lives. Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood to adolescence and throughout our adulthood. Mental health enables us to: Realize our full potential Cope with the stresses & challenges of life Work productively Find meaning & contribute to our communities Feel positivity & a sense of satisfaction Have energy for what is important and enjoyable Have an overall sense of well-being What Can Impact Mental Health? Our mental health can be affected by many things including but not limited to: Lack of sleep Little to no opportunity to recharge by engaging in self-care Family problems Financial problems Work problems Exposure to trauma (especially repeated exposure) Substance use problems Local, national, and worldwide conflicts and unrest Covid-19 A lack of knowledge or skills for how to deal with life’s stressors As our mental health is influenced by life experiences, relationships, physical health, our environment, and what is happening in the world, our mental health can have ups and downs - but that does not automatically mean we have a mental illness. Most of 2
the time with coping skills, reaching out to a trusted support system, and resiliency, people are able to work through difficulties. So, What Is the Difference Between Mental Health & Mental Illness? Mental illness refers to a wide range of conditions that affects a person’s thinking, feeling state, behavior, and/or mood. These conditions deeply impact day-to-day living and may also affect a person’s ability to relate to others and the normal activities of life. Mental illness can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, social standing, race/ethnicity, or religious/spiritual beliefs. Mental illness can be caused by biological factors such as genes, trauma and abuse, family history, and brain chemistry. Mental illness is not about weakness or the need to “just get over it”. Mental illness requires professional help and should be seen as a medical condition. Some of the most common types of mental illness include: Depression Anxiety Mood disorders, including bipolar Personality disorders Schizophrenia Trauma disorders Eating disorders Addictive behaviors What Should You Do About It When Your Mental Health Is Impacted? City and County of San Francisco Carol Isen Human Resources Director Connecting People withPurpose www.sfdhr.org Department of Human Resources MEMORANDUM DATE: TO: May 3, 2022 Department Heads Departmental Personnel Officers FROM: Carol Isen, Human Resources Director SUBJECT: Prioritizing the Health and Well-Being of all City Employees The City and County of San Francisco recognizes that in order to best serve the residents of San Francisco, we must prioritize the well-being of our employees. For that reason, we are encouraging employees to participate in programs designed to improve mental health, prevent long-term disease, and support employees to be more present and focused both at work and home. These efforts are part of our shared effort to build a culture of employee wellness. Wellness in the workplace is critical because time spent at work constitutes a significant portion of an employee’s waking hours on any given workday. Work environments, work culture, and our co- workers can influence choices made during the workday, such as what to eat for lunch and what to do on a break. These decisions can have a significant impact on the health of each individual. Developing a culture of wellness requires support from leadership, which is why we need your help. We are asking you to support your department staff in making healthy choices and achieving their health goals. Support may look like starting a buddy system where co-workers encourage each other to choose healthy meals, encouraging attending citywide stretching or mindfulness breaks, organizing walks during employee lunch breaks, or participating in a healthy challenge or activity together. The San Francisco Health Services System (SF HSS) offers a range of options to support employee well-being, including programs that support mental and emotional well-being, stress management, physical activity and movement, nutrition, and preventive care. In addition, most departments have one or more “Well-Being Champions” to provide well-being activities to employees. Please sign-up to participate and encourage your co-workers to participate as well. Department Well- Being Champions can share a list of the available well-being resources such as: •Employee Assistance Program(EAP) oFree, confidential, and voluntary counseling services oIndividual consultations and referrals oOrganizational services For more information visit: https://sfhss.org/eap •Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)– This year long program developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can support employees with making lifestyle changes to lose weight, improve overall health, and reduce the risk for type-2 diabetes. Te, Coma (ART) From: Sent: To: Subject: San Francisco Health Service System <HSS.Noreply@sfgov.org> Monday, May 9, 2022 11:31 AM Te, Coma (ART) We're Here for You: Mental Health Awareness Month - Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue, affecting 18.1% of the U.S. population annually - 40 million adults. What is Anxiety? Anxiety is a persistent feeling of fear, nervousness, or worry, often accompanied by thoughts of dread about a thing, a situation, an event, and sometimes even about stuff we can’t quite put our finger on. It is the emotion centers of our brain (the amygdala) taking over the logical thinking part of our brain (the prefrontal cortex.) Anxiety is an important feeling that can function as an alarm, letting us know that something isn’t quite right and needs our attention. It activates the fight or flight response, which is important when we need to respond to a threat to our safety. It can also get activated at times when the thinking part of our brain perceives a threat that may not be present – that is the feeling of worry, nervousness or fear known as anxiety. Learn more here. When is it a problem? We all experience worry, and nervousness and feel anxious at different points in our lives. Whether it is work problems, career frustrations, health concerns, parenting, relationships, finances, and more, worry and feelings of anxiety are common. We are often able to deal with this worry and anxiety by talking to our trusted support system (usually friends or family), distracting ourselves, doing exercise, engaging in mindfulness practice, or working on problem-solving. 1
However, at times, it does not go away easily and can interfere with our daily life. It can become debilitating and cause a number of symptoms such as: Avoidance of things we need to do Depression Digestive problems Feelings of hopelessness Foggy thinking Headaches Irritability and/or lack of patience Lack of energy or motivation Loss of sleep Lost appetite Persistent nervousness What can you do about it? If you are experiencing anxiety that is negatively impacting your life, get help early to understand the source of your anxiety, build resiliency, and improve your wellbeing. The wonderful thing about our brain is that we can strengthen the neuro pathways that counter the type of anxiety that makes us feel bad – we can learn to worry less and do things to help our brain perceive threats only when it is necessary. The goal is to not rid ourselves of anxiety because sometimes it is helpful like a motivator or a warning signal. The goal is to be able to identify when it is useful and when it is not and to use a skill set to self-regulate our response to a trigger (something that activates the amygdala and our flight or fight response.) Click here for a short video. Interested in knowing what your Mental Health Profile is?- Take the assessment to learn more. Exercise, getting out in nature, meditation, and distraction with enjoyable activities are all good ways to deal with anxiety. Learn if your worry days are a sign anxiety. Take the self assessment. Te, Coma (ART) From: Sent: To: Subject: San Francisco Health Service System <HSS.NoReply@sfgov.org> Monday, May 16, 2022 11:31 AM Te, Coma (ART) We're Here for You: Mental Health Awareness Month - Family Mental Health Family Mental Health What is Family Mental Health? Family mental health includes the emotional, psychological, and social well- being of the family unit and its individual family members. Starting at birth and throughout life, the developmental stages are numerous and ever-changing; so too, are life’s challenges. The mental health of a family helps determine our priorities, how we deal with stress, relate to others, make choices, form relationships, and how we realize our potential in the world, both at work and in our personal lives. When it comes to family mental health, one size does not fit all. American families come from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Each family’s background affects the way they view and get help for mental health. Learn more about seeking out mental health services that best fit your family’s needs and what a mental health professional can do to provide culturally competent care. Learn More! What can influence family mental health? Family mental health is influenced by both risk and protective factors. Risk factors are those things that can help to create or cause problems or challenges such as: Abuse or neglect Chronic illness 1
Family history of mental illness Financial insecurity Lack of support system Local and world politics and social issues Poor communication Poor nutrition or food insecurity Substance abuse Trauma (in childhood and/or throughout the life/work cycle) Protective factors are those things that help to prevent problems and serve as a safety net or scaffolding when problems do arise. Protective factors help us to be resilient in the face of adversity. Some examples are: An environment where all members feel heard, understood, valued, and validated Clear boundaries Clear values and moral beliefs Emotional self-regulation Feeling secure Having access to resources & help in time of need Healthy communication which includes listening Healthy diet and exercise Learned coping skills and problem-solving skills Participation in community Reliable support and healthy discipline from significant others To learn more, visit the American Mental Wellness Association or visit the CDC to learn about risk and protective factors for specific concerns. Family mental health is also influenced by the quality and frequency of time spent together. As an example, over 20 years of studies have shown that something as simple (or hard) as having regular family meals, can have a deep influence on physical, mental, and brain health and behavior. Read more or listen to a podcast about this. If family meals are not a possibility in your family, there are plenty of other ways to spend quality time together whether getting outdoors, playing a game, or sharing a book or movie. How Do You Know When You Need Help? If things feel overwhelming, out of control or just not right in your family, it is time to pause and assess if you need to reach out for help. Te, Coma (ART) From: Sent: To: Subject: San Francisco Health Service System <HSS.NoReply@sfgov.org> Monday, May 23, 2022 11:46 AM Te, Coma (ART) We're Here for You: Mental Health Awareness Month - Stress & Burnout Stress & Burnout WHAT IS BURNOUT? This week we are highlighting the topic of burnout. If you are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and having difficulty feeling motivated to meet the demands of life at work or at home, you may be experiencing burnout or be on the road to burnout. While burnout is not a medical diagnosis, it is a state of emotional, mental, and sometimes physical exhaustion. It is brought on by persistent, prolonged, and repeated stress without ample opportunity to regroup, recharge, and separate oneself from what is causing the stress. Though burnout is most often related to work stress, it can also show up in other areas of our lives such as relationships, caretaking, and even parenting. WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF BURNOUT? We all encounter stress in our work and personal lives at times. However, when that stress is nagging and persistent and without let-up, it can cause impairment and distress. It is important to reach out for help to your trusted support system or a professional if you notice yourself feeling distressed or impaired. Signs of burnout can be physical, emotional, and/or behavioral. Some of the signs that may indicate you are heading toward burnout are: 1
Persistent feelings of a lack of control Inability to relax and recharge Feelings of hopelessness, depression, or panic No longer feeling like your usual self Focusing on survival Nagging anxiety Difficulty sleeping or feeling rested Having a sense of dread Dwindling ability to be compassionate or care Loss of motivation Desire to avoid that which makes you feel burned out For more information about the signs of burnout, check out this article in HelpGuide.org. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO AVOID BURNOUT? Avoiding burnout can be possible by making a habit of asking yourself, “How am I feeling?" How am I functioning?” “What do I need?” If things feel off for you... take note, and take action: Reach out for help early to the Employee Assistance Program for a consultation Evaluate your options Ask for help from those around you Seek support from your trusted support system Set boundaries to ensure you have downtime for oRelaxation oRest oExercise oSleep oEating healthy Do things that make you feel happy Ask others to check in with you and hold you accountable for self-care IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH BURNOUT Don’t try to push through it and just deal – Ask for the help you need. It is time to press the pause button and reach out. You are not alone and deserve to feel better. Please refer to the resources below, to get you started: 1. Ayele (a.k.a) W is a Black man, who has spent a non-negligible portion of his afternoons (in 2015) at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. In my judgment, the facts presented in my request for a fee waiver and expedited processing are not the sort to bolster public confidence in the activities of the U.S government. As a Black man with a U.S college degree, (who has spent many afternoons at the National Museum of the W (AACL) – MICHAEL A. AYELE 4
REQUEST FOR RECORDS 05/23/2022 American Indian), I am vexed whenever I audition Fox News “journalists” propagating the racist “white replacement theory.” Even though I have previously watched Fox News, I no longer do so because of their many news coverages, which I deem to be historically fallacious and academically dishonest. For the reasons mentioned above, I would like to take this opportunity to denounce the systemic chauvinism, discrimination, misogyny, racism and sexism, which is pervasive throughout American society (and contributing a great to the gun violence public health epidemic). I would also like to take this opportunity to denounce violence committed against women irrespective of their racial backgrounds, their sexual orientations, their national origins and their religious affiliations. The core issues presented in this records request are as follows. 1) How has your city/county/state/federal government commemorated “Mental Health Awareness Month?” Have you had conversations about the shady history surrounding the diagnosis of schizophrenia? Have you had conversations about domestic violence and the recently publicized defamation trial of Amber Heard? Have you had conversations about the many systemic failures, which ultimately culminated in the May 14th 2022 mass-shooting rampage of Buffalo, New York? Have you had conversations about the selective enforcement of “Red Flag Laws?” If yes, will you promptly disclose the discussions you have had? 2) What formal/informal opinions does your city/county/state/federal government hold about the racist propaganda of “white replacement theory?” Does your public library have a copy of William Luther Pierce book entitled “The Turner Diaries?” Does your public library have a copy of Renaud Camus book entitled “Le Grand Remplacement?” Has your public library previously invited members of the general public and representatives of the media to discuss the books of William Luther Pierce and Renaud Camus? Has your public library previously invited members of the general public and representatives of the media to discuss the racist propaganda of “white replacement theory?” Has your city/county/state/federal government made an official recommendation for people to visit the National Museum of the American Indian for the purpose of countering the mainstream nature of “white replacement theory?” If yes, will you promptly disclose those records? This records request should be expedited because it puts into question the government’s integrity about the manner in which women and racial minorities are treated in the U.S.A. My request for a fee waiver should be granted because [1] I have identified operations and activities of the federal government in concert with U.S city/county/state government; [2] the issues presented are meaningfully informative about government operations or activities in order to be ‘likely to contribute’ to and increase public understanding of those operations or activities. Under penalty of perjury, I hereby declare all the statements I have made to be true and accurate. Be well. Take care. Keep yourselves at arms distance. W (AACL) Michael A. Another Another Black person and two white people were wounded. Federal officials are investigating the shooting as a hate crime; a state-level murder case is already underway. (…) The gunman opened fire at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday outside Tops Friendly Market, a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in the western New York city. The gunman began shooting in the parking lot. Inside, he exchanged gunfire with a security guard, who was killed, as he stalked through the aisles shooting shoppers. Wearing a helmet camera, the gunman livestreamed the shooting on Twitch. The gaming platform said it took down the video in less than two minutes. At one point, the video shows, he aimed at a white person hiding behind a checkout counter, but said “Sorry!” and didn’t shoot. When police confronted the gunman as he exited the store, he put his rifle to his neck. He then dropped the gun and surrendered. (…) Police said the 13 victims, including the wounded, ranged in age from 20 to 86. Most were over age 50. (…) Police have identified the gunman as Payton Gendron, 18. He lived with his family in Conklin, New York, a small town about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of Buffalo. He graduated from high school in June 2021 — two weeks after state police took him to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after he said he aspired to murder-suicide, according to authorities. He was released about a day later. Officials said there was no specific threat or basis for criminal charges. He told authorities it was a joke —but it really wasn’t, according to an online diary that recounts months of active, detailed planning for a livestream attack on Black people. The diary, kept on the chat platform Discord, was private until about a half-hour before the shooting, when a small group of users got invitations to view it, and some accepted, the company said. Discord said it removed the diary upon learning of it. Investigators have said they are looking into all Gendron’s social media postings. A separate, online screed that he apparently authored says the attack was meant to terrorize nonwhite, non-Christian people into fleeing the U.S. The diatribe resounds with white supremacist, anti-immigrant and antisemitic beliefs that reflect an increasingly prominent conspiracy theory about a plot to reduce white people’s global influence by “replacing” them. In a visit to Buffalo on Tuesday, Biden called on the nation to “reject the lie.” W (AACL) – MICHAEL A. AYELE 6
REQUEST FOR RECORDS 05/23/2022 Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia has called the massacre “an absolute racist hate crime” by a man with hate in his “heart, soul and mind.” Gendron has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers have declined to comment. He is jailed ahead of a court hearing Thursday. (…) Officials said the AR-15-style rifle was purchased legally, but New York doesn’t allow sales of the ammunition magazines that were used. Gendron bought the weapon within the past few months at a store near his home. Vintage Firearms owner Robert Donald said he has records of the sale but didn’t recall Gendron or the transaction. He said Gendron passed an instant background check on the day he bought the weapon. Buffalo supermarket shooting: What do we know so far? Starling Jenkins III — an executive chauffer and security guard for Depp who first met the actor in 1993, and has since provided services ranging from childcare, animal care and personal-assistant duties to security and transportation — testified in court Thursday as Depp, 58, and Heard, 36, continue to face off in the defamation trial that kicked off April 11. Speaking from a live video call to the court in Fairfax, Virginia, Jenkins recalled accompanying the Aquaman actress to Coachella in 2016. While driving Heard to the festival one night, Jenkins says they "had a conversation pertaining to the surprise she left in the boss's bed" following a fight she and Depp allegedly had before she departed for the trip with friends. Clarifying that the "surprise" was "the defecation," Jenkins testified that Heard told him it was "a horrible practical joke gone wrong." (…) On the stand Wednesday, Depp said he was "shown a picture of" the bed incident, which allegedly took place after he and his then-wife had an argument during her 30th birthday party, before she headed to Coachella. "I had gone to Mr. [security guard Sean] Bett and said, 'She's at Coachella. I think it's a good time to go downtown so that I can get some of my things and get them out of there,' especially things that were precious to me," the Edward Scissorhands star recalled. "And he said, 'I don't think now's a good time to go.' And I thought, 'It's the perfect time. She's not going to be home for two days.' " "Then he showed me a photograph on his telephone of … it was a photograph of our bed, and on my side of the bed, was human fecal matter," Depp testified. The actor said of his initial response, "I mean ... I laughed. It was so outside. It was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh. So I did not go down there that day." According to Depp, Heard "tried to blame" the feces "on the dogs,” adding, "They're teacup Yorkies. They weigh about 4 pounds each. The photograph that I saw — I lived with those dogs for many years. It was not the dogs." (…) Back in November 2020, Depp lost his highly publicized U.K. libel lawsuit case against British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife-beater.” The court upheld the outlet’s claims as being “substantially true” and Heard testified to back up the claims. REQUEST FOR RECORDS 05/23/2022 with Depp, claiming most of their fights ended with her being assaulted. But she insisted no argument ended with human fecal matter in their marital bed. One of the many headline-grabbing claims during trial is that, in April 2016, there was "human fecal matter" left on Depp's side of the bed. (The topic even made it into Saturdau Night Live’s latest cold open.) Last month, the court was shown a photo of the defecation, which Heard insinuated was from the pair's small dogs, Boo or Pistol, not a prank played by her or her friend. "What if any issues did Boo have with bathroom problems, if you will?" Heard's lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, asked. "She had eaten Johnny's weed when she was a puppy and had bowel control issues for her entire life, among some other issues, we regularly had to take her to the vet," Heard replied. "She had some control issues." Heard said she left the dogs in bed while she packed for Coachella. "Did you commit any kind of prank?" Bredehoft asked. "Absolutely not," Heard replied. "First of all, I don't think that's funny. I don't know what grown women does. I was also not in a pranking mood, my life was falling apart." (…) Heard testified Depp abused her the night before. "I had just been attacked on my 30th birthday by my violent husband with whom I was desperately in love and knew I needed to leave. It was not really a jovial time and I don't think that's funny, period. That's disgusting," the actress added. Heard claimed that the night prior, Depp chest-bumped her "in a kind of bro-y way." When she was on the ground, he allegedly grabbed her pubic bone. "He kind of pushed my down and was asking me: 'You're so tough? You wanna be tough like a man now?" she claimed. The actress said she used their safe word "couch," which meant truce. "I was just so tried, hurt. I remember crying, feeling ridiculous," she told a jury. As Depp left their penthouse that night, Heard said the actor purportedly yelled out, "Happy f****** birthday!" The April 2016 incident was one of many Heard walked the jury through.
