  1. COC Traveling Courses By Anwar Hossain 2012 Chair, Traveling Course Committee

  2. Background • The Traveling Course Program was established by the Council of Chapters Governing Board to provide low cost, high quality, continuing education offerings for ASA Chapters

  3. Course Selection • At each JSM, the Traveling Course Committee meets to plan the courses for the following year • Course topics are selected that would have a broad appeal to the general ASA membership • Potential instructors on these topics are targeted based on a proven record of high quality presentations • 3-5 courses are settled on each year and announced to the Council of Chapters in the Fall

  4. Deciding Which Chapters Get a Course • Chapters interested in hosting a Traveling Course must complete an application and submit to the COCGB Liaison by December 31 • On the application the chapter can specify their, first, second, and third choices for which course they would like to host • In recent years the Traveling Course Committee receives between 15-20 applications • The Traveling Course committee, made up of at least one member of each of the six Chapter Districts and ASA staff liaison, chooses the local Chapters and works with the speakers and Chapters to select dates for each course. Each course is typically given more than once in one trip by the speaker. The courses are often awarded according to geographical proximity to keep travel cost low, with special consideration given to smaller Chapters and Chapters that have not had a traveling course recently • About 65% of the applications are awarded with a course

  5. Arrangements • Chapters work with the instructor to set the date of the presentation • Chapters are responsible for • Reserving a room to hold the course • Audio visual equipment • Catering • Handling course registrations • Creating course handouts • Promoting the course to the chapter members and to others in the area • Local expenses of the instructor e.g. transportation to and from the airport, instructor hotel stay, meals, etc. • Chapter pays back to the Council of Chapters the greater of $500 or $25 per attendee

  6. Arrangements • The ASA is responsible for • Presenter airfare • Presenter honorarium • Reimbursing the chapter for handout preparation • Assisting the chapter with promoting the course nationally
