Getting into law school can be very competitive; admissions officers look at a variety of factors when considering to accept potential students. One of the many things admissions personnel may look at are letters of recommendation. Keeping a few things in mind may be able to help an application stand out, in a good way.
Choose quality over quantity. Submitting the right type of recommendation letter can make all the difference in an application. Admissions officers would rather see a few well-written and meaningful letters rather than a stack of impersonal and generic ones. Choose professors that will be able to speak to the development over a period of time and have something important or meaningful to say, not just ones that will quickly write something without really saying anything.
Preparation and timing are key. Make sure to give those writing the recommendations plenty of time so they are able to write something high quality and don’t feel rushed by deadlines. They may be getting multiple requests for recommendations letters, so the earlier the better. This will also give enough time to find backups in case the first recommendations won’t reflect well on the application.
Don’t just pick big names. It can be tempting to use connections to get a letter from a judge or high ranking official but it won’t mean much if the person writes a generic letter. This may come across as a very transparent attempt to name drop. Getting letters from these individuals can be very helpful but only if they are high quality and can accurately speak to the applicant.
