  2. Real Time Acquisition and Archive of WSR-88D Level II Data (pilot project) • The NCDC is involved in a NOAA, “proof of concept” project to receive all large bandwidth WSR-88D level II data over the Abilene Network (non-commodity research-oriented network) in real time • In June 2000, the NCDC started receiving base data (via the INTERNET) in real time from a test bed of five radars. • The number has increased to fourteen sites • Another 30 NEXRAD sites are targeted for real time electronic ingest by the Spring of 2001 • OPS is now connected to Internet2/Abilene - April 24 • Committed to making data available – probably by FTP from servers • Data volume – Bandwidth and storage issues

  4. Long Term Goals WSR-88D Level II Data Ingest, Archive & Dissemination Targeted for 2003 • Transfer 158 WSR-88D sites, Level II data via Abilene Network to NCDC • Real time Level II data ingest and archive on the NCDC Robotic Mass Storage System (HDSS). • Customer requests filled from the HDSS using a WEB interface (FTP) Additional Information • Requirement to send to NCEP and own field offices • OPS is now connected to Internet2/Abilene - April 24 • Data volume – Bandwidth and storage issues • Committed to making data available – probably by FTP from servers
