  2. The difference: 6 more minutes of reading each day

  3. The difference in amount of words: 3rd grade: 100,448 6th grade: 230,422

  4. An analysis of more than 9.9 million students found that only those students who read15 minutes or more per day made accelerated reading gains. Students who read fewer than15 minutes daily saw below-average reading gains. Students who read between just over a half-hour and an hour per day saw the greatest gains of all.

  5. Some researchers estimate that children learn 1 new word for every 1,000 words read.  

  6. Student who reads 20 minutes a day • 3,600minutes per school year • 1,800,000 words per school year • 90th percentile on standardized tests

  7. Student who reads 5 minutes a day • 900 minutes per school year • 282,000 words per school year • 50th percentile on standardized tests

  8. Student who reads 1 minute a day • 180minutes per school year • 8,000 words per school year • 10th percentile on standardized tests

  9. From K-6 • 20 minutes a day = 60 days* • 5minutes a day = 12 days* • 1minutes a day = 3 days* * equivalent school days

  10. Why does this matter?

  11. Vocabulary size impacts reading ability and success.

  12. Reading ability influences writing ability.

  13. Reading ability impacts all other academic subjects.

  14. Students in the top tercileof reading skill answered 70% more math and science questions correctly than students in the bottom tercile, even on questions with low reading difficulty.

  15. Students need to see words in print, not just hear words.

  16. To become a better reader, you have to read.

  21. What can you do to help grow a reader?

  22. Show a positive attitude about books and reading.

  23. Let your children see you read.

  24. Never treat reading as a punishment or a reward.

  25. Make reading an equal priority in the schedule, not an if-there’s-time activity.

  26. Get your kid a library card.

  27. Let kids chose their own books.

  28. Don’t judge their book choices.

  29. Talk to kids about what they are reading.
