Flags Raising Article • Objective: Today I will write a news article about the emotional impact that the flag raising had on the Marines’ emotional state during the battle. • Activity: You will write a newspaper article detailing the flag raising on Mount Suribachi. Consider that this article may very well accompany Rosenthal’s famous picture. HINT: newspaper articles highlight the who, what, where, when, why, how types of information associated with an event. The journalist will remain unbiased (not take a side) in the article, but s/he will frequently include witness quotes that do include feelings. • Note: this article is the fourth artifact that you can use for the war section of yourscrapbook.

Scrapbook Work Time • Objective: Today I will create the pages of my soldier’s scrapbook, synthesizing the information from my research, my reading, and my artifacts into an genuine representation of his life. • Activity: • 1. Finish up creating the pages for his childhood. Then, you should move on to the pages devoted to his war experience. Use the book to find whatever information you need to about his experiences during the war. • 2. Look over the artifacts that you and your partner have written: the private journal from D-Day, the letter to home, the letter from home, and the news article on the flag raising. Decide what you still need to do for each of these to make them worthy to place in your scrapbook. Your partnered scrapbook should eventually have two journals, two letters, one news article, and an obituary. If they aren’t good enough for your assessment, fix them! Remember that the artifacts should all go in the war section because they are all from the war. You can also include things like D-Day experiences, friends saved/lost, etc.
