Explore SCATBI, RIPA-2, ALFA, MCLA, and CLQT for comprehensive cognitive assessments in brain injury cases. These tools provide standardized scores to evaluate perception, memory, reasoning, language, and functional activities. Normed on impaired and healthy populations, yielding valuable insights for treatment planning.

Scales of Cognitive Ability for Traumatic Brain Injury (SCATBI)Adamovich, B & Henderson, J. 1992 • Adolescent (ages 16 and up)/Adult • 30-120 minutes
SCATBI • Can obtain standardized scores for each individual subtest • Has scores for “lower functioning” (Perception/Discrimination, Orientation, and Organization) versus “higher functioning” (Recall and Reasoning) • Also has “SCATBI” total score
SCATBI • Standardized score correlates to severity rankings of severe, moderate, mild, borderline normal, and average normal • Test is normed on impaired population, but can determine standard deviations above and below norms of “uninjured” population
Z-scores • Z-score is a measurement of standard deviation from the norm • As long as you have a mean and standard deviation for healthy population, you can determine a z-score • Z-score = patient score minus mean of normed population divided by the standard deviation
Ross Information Processing Assessment-2Deborah Ross-Swain, 1996 • ages 15 to 90 • 45 – 60 minutes Ross-Information Processing Assessment-G (Geriatric)Deborah Ross-Swain, MA & Paul Fogle, 1996 • ages 55+ • 25 – 35 minutes
RIPA-2 Made up of 10 subtests: • Immediate & Recent Memory • Temporal Orientation (Recent & Remote Memory) • Spatial Orientation • Orientation to Environment • Recall of General Information • Problem Solving and Abstract Reasoning • Organization • Auditory Processing and Retention
RIPA-G Made up of 12 subtests: • Immediate and Recent Memory • Temporal, Spatial, & Environmental Orientation • Recall of General Information • Problem Solving & Abstract Reasoning (for hospital ADLs) • Organization of Information • Auditory Processing and Comprehension
RIPA-G • Problem Solving and Concrete Reasoning ( 2 supplemental subtests: • Naming Common Objects • Functional Oral Reading
RIPA-2/RIPA-G • Both normed on impaired populations • Obtain standard scores/%ile ranks that correlate to severity levels: -Mild -Moderate -Severe -Marked
Assessment of Language-Related Functional Activities (ALFA)Baines, K., Martin, A., & McMartin-Heeringa, H. 1999 • ages 20 to 95 • 30 minutes to 2 hours
ALFA Function, function, function!! • Telling Time • Counting Money • Addressing an Envelope • Solving Daily Math Problems • Writing a Check/Balancing a Checkbook • Understanding Medicine Labels • Using a Calendar, Reading Instructions • Using the Telephone • Writing a Phone Message.
Understanding medicine labels • Insert video
ALFA • Normed on impaired population • Scoring is either “1” or “0” for correct/incorrect response or each task is broken into sub-components which are scored “0” or “1’ • Score correlates to level of function
Measure of Cognitive-Linguistic Abilities (MCLA)Ellmo, W. et.al, 1995 • Adolescents/Adults (ages *** to ***) • 45-60 minutes
Mcla Receptive language • Paragraph comprehension/recall • Story recall • Verbal abstract reasoning • Information processing checklist Expressive language • Discourse measures ( picture description, procedural narrative, self-generated narrative, discourse rating scale)
Mcla • Fluency measures (3 sets of divergent naming tasks, visual confrontation naming) Pragmatic functioning • Pragmatic rating scale Reading • Functional reading and higher level reading Writing • Self-generated narrative & narrative rating scale Oral mechanism SCREENING
MCLA discourse rating scale • Insert picture
MCLA • Normed on healthy population: age and education level • Scoring – standardized scores; can determine z-scores/standard deviations
Cognitive-Linguistic Quick Test (CLQT)Helm-Estabrooks, N. 2001 • 18 to 89 years • 15 to 30 minutes
CLQT 2012 MSHA Conference
CLQT Identifies strengths and weaknesses quickly in 5 cognitive domains • Attention • Memory • Executive functions • Language • Visuospatial skills • Clock Drawing
VisuoSpatial/Trail-making Subtest • Add video
