Grammar: Simple Past • Use 1:Completed action in the past • We use the simple past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. • Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific timein mind. • John saw a movie yesterday. • I did my homework. • Last year, she traveled to Japan. • Last year, she didn’t travel to China. • Did you go shopping last weekend? • What did you dolast night?
Grammar: Simple Past • Use 2:Duration in the past • The simple past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past. • A duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions such as: for two years, for five minutes, all day, all year, etc. • I lived in England for three years. • Sara studied Spanish for 2 years. • We talked on the phone for 30 minutes. • Did you waitfor more than 20 minutes?
Grammar: Simple Past • Use 3:Habits in the past (can also use ‘used to’) • The simple past can also be used to describe a habit which stopped in the past. • To make it clear that we are talking about a habit, we often add expressions such as: always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc. • I studied French when I was a child. • He always went to a beach on his vacations. • I neverskipped school in high school, I alwayswent to class. • Did you play sports when you were younger?

Grammar: ‘used to’ • Use 1:Habits in the past • ‘used to’ expresses the idea that something was an old habit that stopped in the past. • It indicates that something was often repeated in the past, but it is not usually done now. • It’s a more common way of expressing old habits than the simple past. • I used to study French. • He used to always go to the beach on his vacation. • I never used to skip school in high school. • Did you use to play sports when you were younger?
