  3. Structural Analysis: Prefixes im-, in- ir-, il- Look at this word and watch me read it: immature Turn to your partner and divide the word into syllables. Be sure to identify the prefix and the root word. im/ma/ture prefix-im, and root word mature Did you notice that the prefix formed the first syllable of the word?

  8. Decode Longer Words When you come to a longer word, you can try several different strategies to determine its pronunciation. You can… Use letter sounds and look for familiar words and patterns. Try dividing the word into syllables Break the word into smaller word parts, such as roots and affixes. Use a dictionary to clarify the word’s pronunciation.
