First Year Modules – Practical Times • Programming and Data Structures • FIVE 2-hour Sessions • You do TWO of them • Formal Aspects of Computer Science • Four 2-hour Sessions • You do ONE of them • Computer Systems • Three 2-hour Sessions • You do ONE of them • Foundations of Computer Science • ONE 1-hour Session • Thursday 5.15 You will be allocated – AFTER THURSDAY - to practical sessions that fit in with your other modules.
“Electives” – to be passed with 40% • Choose a USEFUL module • Maths, Business, Psychology etc. • Choose a language • Hebrew, Japanese, French etc. • Choose an INTERESTING and ENJOYABLE module • Anthropology, Philosophy, Politics, Economics etc. etc. etc. • Choose an ESCAPE ROUTE! They must NOT clash with Lectures but MAY clash with practicals.

Exams and Assessment • Paper (in May/June) and Practical • Normally 2:1 (except 2:3 in PDS) • How to Fail • Fail to get 40% IN THE MODULE • Collections • First week of Epiphany Term (Week 11) • Do NOT count towards final module mark, therefore • Don’t waste time preparing for them!!!!!! • Do your very best and get an idea of how well you are doing
Advisors/Tutors • Each student has a member of staff as his/her Advisor • Your Advisor does not do your work for you! • Your Advisor can advise you! • Your Advisor will be told if you “do wrong”. • Your Advisor can be asked for a reference.
Staff Student (Consultative) Committee • The SSC is :- • The correct channel for feedback • The correct channel for complaints • The correct channel for consultation • The correct channel for praise(????) • Alternatively see me (or Sarah or …) • DO NOT LEAVE a problem hidden • Class Reps will be chosen in a week or so
Teaching and Learning • Not the same as school • Lectures, Practicals, work in “your own time” • It should be YOUR OWN WORK (mainly) BUT you should help each other • Plagiarism policy • Not all copying is Plagiarism You MUST cite all sources (like they do in Arts subjects) • Collusion is a connected but different problem • You have Lectures not Lessons • ASK questions – PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!!! • It is vital to meet deadlines – • See “Policy on Late Hand-In of Work” http://www.dur.ac.uk/teachingandlearning.handbook/6-1-4-3.pdf
Medical and other “Good Cause” Evidence • We need to know if you are unable to attend what you ought to attend or to do the work you ought to do! • Tell us – We are very reasonable • Evidence must be provided BEFORE exam boards. • Self-certification is OK for non-assessed work • You may need “Yellow Forms” and MCFs!
University Registration Form • It has your STUDENT ID NUMBER (Banner Number) • Get it signed now or later – by a member of staff • Go to the other departments • Return it to D117 (Tuesday) or ER140 (Tues or Wed) • Make any necessary corrections to the data • Then you can get to use the Library and computers! • What if you change your mind???

Departmental Registration Form • You need your Student Number • The form must be filled in and SIGNED! • What if you change your mind? • Fill in another one and let us know. • This is NOT a problem.
Photographs • You need to get yet another photograph taken • For the department (and its web pages) • Tuesday 9.30 – 4.30 • E240 in Engineering • Opposite the Engineering Coffee Bar • TAKE YOUR NAME PLATE WITH YOU • DO NOT FORGET! • Students who do forget will have their bodies photographed after they have been garrotted and eviscerated – and will have AWFUL photos on their web-pages for the next three years!
IT Service • You MUST Register with ITS You NEED a Campus Card or else ….. • CG66 (Monday to Wednesday) – until 6.00 or 8.00 or 7.00. • CM117 (Thursday to Friday) – 9.00 until 5.00 • Helpdesk (after that) • ITS is not Computer Science • Absolutely important to read email • See ITS about ESOL (En-Suite On-Line)
Personal Development Plans/Planning • PDPs are mandatory for all universities. • Durham started a year early • It is optional – but very useful – for students. • Shared between Colleges and Departments. • Much will be on-line • More details will follow

Computer Access • You get your username and password when you register. • You register after checking (possibly on-line) which modules you want to do!!! • BUT you can currently access web browsers via ITS machines • Username = “fresher” • Password = “fresher” • This is temporary • Do you want to join the University Computing Society?
