The Normal Child Basic Premise • Every child has the potential of becoming a fully functioning individual if given appropriate care, nutrition, love, acceptance, and a variety of experiences.
Behavioral Description • Afraid • Non-assertive • Silent, non-verbal • Passive • Non-demanding • Seeks protection • Isolated emotionally and socially
Probable Causes of Shyness • Punishment • Over-control • Over-protection • Reduced experiences
Probable Consequences of Shyness • Tension, stress, and anxiety • Fear • Withdrawal • Loneliness and increased isolation • Reduced participation in class • Reduced socialization • Psychopathology (personality disorder)

Changing Your Child’s Behavior • Determine the probable causes of your child’s shyness and change as necessary • Reinforce positively, often, your child’s expressions of assertiveness by eliciting his or her participation and opinion • Do not over-protect or “defend” your child • Help your child face the situations and “win” rather than escape or avoid them
Important Basics • Talk to your child. Communicate your concerns and willingness to help • Enlist the collaboration of your child’s teacher and counselor • Increase your child’s after-school activities • Dedicate more quality time to your child • Seek professional help
