The City of Seoul A power point by Jaslyn Thienbunlertrat
General Facts • Latitude and Longitude: 37° 34' N 126° 58' E • Population (estimated): over 12 million • Motto: 함께만드는서울, 함께누리는서울 • (Seoul we create together, Seoul we enjoy together) • Song: The Lights of Seoul • Flower: Forsythia
History of Seoul • People have been living in Seoul since the Paleolithic Age • Wiryeseong—Seoul’s first name—was named capital city of Baekje in 18 BC. • Wiryeseong was competed for. The Three Kingdoms continuously battled for it. Baekje had control over it first, then Goguryeo, then the Silla-Baekje alliance. • There were numerous eras! For example, the Goguryeo era, the Joseon era, the Unified Silla era, et cetera. • Seoul had a lot of names! Wiryeseong wasn’t the only one: it was soon followed by Namgyeong (Goguryeo era), Hanseong or Hanyang (Joseon era), Keijo or Gyeongseong (the Japanese colonial rule). • Skip forward a few ages: after WWII, Gyeongseong was renamed Seoul.
Problems • ATM systems in South Korea have crashed, and the VISA card network has not been working. The culprit has not been caught yet. • Pollution and land use are two examples of environmental issues in Seoul • Education is very fierce and competitive. School teachers are very hard on the students, and students tend to rival against each other.
Good Things About Seoul(According to Tourists) • THEY HAVE THE BEST AIRPORT. It’s supplied with a golf course, countless restaurants, a couple spas, a skating rink, and a casino. • THEY HAVE REALLY GOOD FOOD. Green tiramisu, bulgogi, live octopus… and a whole lot more. • A LOT OF ENTERTAINMENT, TECHNOLOGY, AND A HUGE MOB OF CELEBRITIES. 95% of Korean families use the Internet! Seoul is loaded with fans, whether they like pop stars (Girls Generation, Super Junior, Kara, 2NE1) or skating stars (Yuna Kim). • THE LARGEST UNDERGROUND MALL—EVER! Coex Mall is bristling, literally, with shops, restaurants, arcades, museums… However, be sure to stay together! More than 150,000 people visit Coex every day!

God’s Purpose for Seoul Right now Seoul—and most of South Korea—are in really hard times: the new leader of North Korea is threatening them, for example. On the other hand, the good side of Seoul’s present is that it was confirmed that 75% of the nation was Christian! Lots of missionaries are there now, I’m sure, and there are churches being built. Many people are converting to Christianity, too!
Conclusion WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT SEOUL: There are many things. For one thing, my favourite foods are made there! For another, there’s a lot of things I love about Korea. I’ve been fascinated by it since the first time I saw those traditional costumes and played “Arirang” with my school band… but mostly I guess it’s because of all my Korean friends. I just wanted to find out more! I hope you enjoyed this super long power point…
