  2. Master’s (B1) and Doctoral (B2) Research Scholarships • FRQSC promotes and provides financial support for the dissemination of knowledge in fields of research related to social and human sciences, fine arts and literature.

  3. ELIGIBILTY CRITERIAApplicants must meet all the eligibility requirements by October 12th, 2011 (Master’s competition) & October 13, 2011 (Doctoral Competition) • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada ; and • Must be a Quebec Resident

  4. How do you prove Quebec Residency: • Must be residing in Quebec for at least one year (according to the Quebec Health Insurance Act regulations). • New Quebec Resident? Must provide FRQSC with a photocopy of Medicare card.

  5. Cumulate Grade Point Average: • Master applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.70/4.30 from their bachelors degree. • Doctoral applicants: NO GPA requirement • Applicants with a lower grade point average are not eligible.

  6. Eligibility Period for Master’s Applicants registered for no more than one year in graduate studies (equivalent of three full-time sessions) as at April 30, 2012, are eligible for the Master’s competition.

  7. Eligibility Period for Doctoral • Applicants registered for no more than five years year in a doctoral program (equivalent of 15 full-time sessions) as at April 30, 2012, in the program for which they are applying, are eligible for the doctoral competition

  8. Fast-tracking to Doctoral • Applicants admitted to a doctoral program directly after their undergraduate studies or those who have fast-tracked to the doctoral level must, if they are eligible, apply for the Master’s scholarship (B1) competition in order to obtain maximum funding.

  9. Where can you hold your FRQSC award? • Applicants who are Canadian citizens must be enrolled fulltime in a Master’s or Doctoral program offered by a recognized Canadian or Foreign university. • Applicants with permanent resident status are not eligible for a study scholarship or internship outside Canada.

  10. Master’s Candidates: • The Master’s program for which candidates are seeking funding must have a research component of a minimum of 15-credits.

  11. FRQSC Application Process

  12. Student Applications Are Evaluated Based On The Following Criteria: • Excellence of university record • Aptitude for research and relevant experience, where applicable • Scientific quality and interest of the research project

  13. Application Procedures: • Applications for financial support may be written in English or French. However, the project title must be submitted in French. There is no penalty in applying in English.

Make Sure to: • Type single space in Courier New, 10 points • Follow the order of each section when filling out your online application form • Respect the Character limits. • Click the Votre dossier (Your File) button and then click the Transmission de la demande (Send) button. Please note that you may access your file until the competition deadline to make any necessary modifications, even if the information has already been sent.

  16. Master Students - Focus of Planned Research section (1 Page): A) Provide an overview of the focus of the planned research including the research subject and issues (context and questions), objectives, methods and project research approach or means. B) Justify your choice of university and research director, if applicable, as it pertains to the planned research.

  17. Master Students: DESCRIPTION OF ENVISAGED UNIVERSITY PROGRAM – ½ page maximum • Describe the university program content and objectives. Submit the classes and seminars you intend to take, etc. • Indicate how the program is evaluated (by means of a thesis, essay, etc.) Do not describe the research project. • Specify the number of course and research credits.

  18. Doctoral Applicants: Research Environment and Support Section ( ½ page): • Present your choice of university and research director, if applicable, as it pertains to the research project.

  19. Doctoral Students: Description Of Research Project(1 ½ pages maximum) Clearly describe your research project by specifying in the following order: • Research question; • Contribution to the advancement of knowledge; • Research objectives; • Methodology; • Calendar of achievements of the thesis (not of the • doctoral program) • Bibliography (three to five relevant publications) (maximum two pages).

  20. Experience and Achievements Section: • a) Publications ( 1 page maximum) • Start with the most recent. • List refereed publications such as papers, conference summaries, proceedings, published books or chapters of published books • Arts applicants must indicate exhibitions and presentation of individual or collective artwork. • Mark peer-reviewed publications with an asterisk • Submitted articles may be considered only if accompanied by a copy of acknowledgement from the editor, and • Articles accepted for publication must be accompanied by notification from the editor

  21. Experience and Achievement Section cont...: Participation in research projects, and training periods, or any other relevant experience. (1 page maximum): • Describe your participation in research projects and training periods during your previous studies. • Identify project directors and training periods; give the starting and final dates of the activity. You may also indicate any relevant experience that could contribute to evaluation of your application.

  22. Experience and Achievement Section cont...: Other Information For Evaluation Of Your Application (1/2 page maximum). • Mention all relevant information for evaluation of your application and specify, where applicable, the circumstances that may have delayed your studies: work, part-time studies, sick leave, maternity leave, etc.

Helpful Hints on Preparing the Proposal Write your application as clearly as possible Ensure you answer ALL the questions Write in simple language Try to engage with some of the wider questions in your field/discipline so as to show the wider relevance of your proposal Construct clear arguments

  24. Helpful Hints on Preparing the ProposalCONTINUED... Methodology or research plan should be laid out clearly such that each stage is visible to the reader. The first paragraph should make it clear to the reader why this study is so important and why you are the person to do it. Make certain that there are no errors in syntax, spelling

Reference Letters: • 2 letters of reference : • Student must provide Referee with their PIN # • Referee must upload their letter to the student’s portal by 4pm on October 12, 2011 (for Master’s competition) & October 13, 2011 (for doctoral competition). • Referee letters must be completed on the PDF writeable form FRQSC provides online.

  26. A good respondent must: • Explain his/her expertise as a respondent; • Have an enthusiastic tone; • Explain why the applicant is of high calibre and deserves a scholarship; • Highlight the applicant’s skills and accomplishments; • Underscore the applicant’s academic and research skills; • Emphasize the applicant’s personal and professional qualities; • Support the information contained in the application; • Confirm and explain the innovative aspect of the project;

  27. Before Submitting your Application: • Proof-read your work carefully • Ask a friend or relative to read your proposal • Ask an experienced researcher or your supervisor to look over your proposal • Be prepared to revise

Required documents to be mailed: • Avis de dépôt • A photocopy of your Québec medical insurance card • For permanent residents, a copy of Canadian immigration papers (Form IMM 1000, 5292 or Permanent Resident Card) certified by a person legally authorized to authenticate such documents. • For Canadian citizens who were born outside Canada, a proof of citizenship. • Official University Transcripts • Acknowledgements from the editor for all articles submitted and notices received from editors. Confirmations from editors received by e-mail are accepted.

  29. DEADLINE: • Master’s Competition: • Upload Application no later than 4pm on October 12th, 2011. • All supporting documents must be mailed to FRQSC no later than 4pm on October 12th, 2011. • Doctoral Competition: • Upload Application no later than 4pm on October 13th, 2011. • All supporting documents must be mailed to FRQSC no later than 4pm on October 13th, 2011. • PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DEADLINE TO UPLOAD YOUR APPLICATION AND MAIL YOUR DOCUMENTS.
