Education, Education, Education ... • May 1997: New Labour Government • July 1997: First IWMW event held at King's College, London • 13 years of ‘good times’: investment & growth across HE accompanied by technical innovation (Web, broadband, mobile, …) • Web has now become mission critical for institutions • JISC support for UK HE/FE sector
Back Then • University of Sheffield Web site in November 1998 11 Nov 1998 Viewed using Memento Firefox plugin
JISC • Been in existence since 1993 • Follett report 2000: “JISC is perceived as a UK success story, providing a network of world-class standard and a range of excellent services” • Informed by engagement with its communities JISC: If it didn’t exist it would have to be reinvented! JISC is an example of a centralised shared service which provides economies of scale and is pro-active in promoting and delivering innovation across the higher and further education sector.
Web Preservation • JISC: • Identified importance of preservation of Web resources • Funded UKOLN & ULCC to develop advice on best practices through JISC PoWR project Downloaded from the JISC PoWR site, comment on using JISCPress or purchase on Lulu.com Guide to Web Preservation officially launched today Hashtag: #jiscpowr
IWMW Community http://www.flickr.com/photos/milesbanbery/2695356356/
IWMW Since 1997 • 14 events • Delegates from all over UK • Community of practice • Networking, sharing, learning • Discussions on themes about: • What is the Web? • Who controls it? • Who are our users? • How joined up is it? • What about quality? • What about community? • What about new ways of working? IWWM Facilitators
Times They Are A-Changin’ • We are suffering from the challenges of abundance provided by the Web 2.0 services • We are seeing significant changes in how our community is working cf statistics in usage of JISCMail lists
Times They Are A-Changin • Other Web 2.0 changes At one stage it was all about the CMS Used with permission
Times They Are A-Changin • JISCMail (& Mailbase): • Launched in mid 1990s • Provided a sense of community • People will to share & help each other Since 2003 significant drop in JISCMail usage. Many posts now announcements: jobs, events, … • Where is the community now? • We have the infrastructure (Social Web, syndication & aggregation technologies, …). • We have the technical & information literacy skills • What’s missing?

Cuts, Cuts, Cuts • Context today: • Departments closing because they don’t make enough money – e.g. Middlesex University example • Quangos losing funding because they are regarded as inefficient (Becta?) • Redundancies a real possibility • Decline in community, end to growth? • Where does this leave us?

What Happens Now? • Days of growth have ended • Web services will develop but with serious constraints • One of the most important things now is your professional social network: use the next 3 days to develop it! • IWMW 2010 can help you to explore these issues • Make sure you prepare yourself for the future
How IWMW Sees Its Role • Premier event for members of UK HE institutional Web teams • Provide a forum for discussion, debate and sharing of best practices for supporting HEIS in provision of institutional Web services. • Ensure institutions are well-positioned to exploit innovations which can enhance their services. • Provides a forum for JISC-funded developments to be shared across the community and for feedback to be obtained. • Provide a cost-effective national service for the Web management community across UK HE sector. Feel free to give comments on IWMW 2010 blog
But What of the Future? • Possible that cuts and changing priorities could see the sustainability of IWMW questioned • Should we: • Stop doing it? • Reduce length of event? • Run it as a virtual or hybrid event? • Allow commercial providers to provide alternatives? • Look for new business models (e.g. greater sponsorship – the ‘Netsoft lecture’)? Please tell us what you think during the event
