  1. The G.U.E.S.S.Format This is NOT the guess and check method. Each letter represents a step in the process of answering a problem.

  2. G-Given State the given information in the question. example: A girl is picking apples. She had 4 to start with and then ate some along the way. How many apples did the girl eat if she picked a total of 7 apples? G= 7 apples picked, started with 4

  3. U-Unknown State the unknown information in the problem. example: (use problem on previous slide) U= number of apples eaten

  4. E-Equation State the equation. example: let x represent the number of apples eaten. x= 7-4

  5. S-Solve Solve the equation. example: Let x represent the number of apples eaten. x= 7-4 x= 3

  6. S-Statement Give a concluding statement with the answer to the problem. example: Let x represent the number of apples eaten. x= 7-4 x= 3 Therefore, three apples were eaten.

  7. Asa Whole: example: A girl is picking apples. She had 4 to start with and then ate some along the way. How many apples did the girl eat if she picked a total of 7 apples? G= 7 apples picked, started with 4 U= number of apples eaten E= x= 7-4 S= x= 3 S= Therefore, three apples were eaten.

  8. HelpfulHints • Word problems tend to have many different words referring to one operation. Use the table on the next slide to guide you when faced with an unfamiliar term. • In order to solve any problem, you must always isolate the variable.
