10th-12thgrade: music/choral STANDARD 1: Students will use body, voice and instruments as means of musical expression. Objective 3: Demonstrate notational literacy. a. Identify and define standard notation terms and symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation and expression. By: Joe Woolf
Pitch Pitch defines the ability to correctly match an expected tone. Musical notation specifies the location of the desired pitch.
Rhythm Rhythm is a critical element of choral music.
Dynamics Dynamics bring color and emotion to life in the music we sing. Musical notation for soft and loud dynamics would be examples of piano or forte.
Tempo The speed in which music is performed. A Metronome can be used to articulate a specific tempo. A slow tempo would be used in a lullaby. A fast tempo would be used in a march. Click on the link below to experiment with different tempos. Interactive Metronome
Articulation & Expression Without proper articulation words are easily misunderstood and difficult for the audience to understand. Expression allows the choir to convey feelings through music.
