Historic Floods The Galveston Hurricane: • The Galveston, Texas, hurricane of 1900 killed at least 8,000 people. The Johnstown Flood: • In 1889 a dam break upstream from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, released a 30-40 foot wall of water that killed 2200 people within minutes. Louisville, Kentucky :October 6th 2013 (most recent) • The region received 5.91 inches of rain Saturday, breaking the previous single-day record for Oct. 5 of 3.07 inches in 1910, the National Weather Service said.
Causes • Flash flooding occurs when precipitation falls rapidly on saturated soil or dry soil that has poor absorption ability
Hazards • The advice “Turn Around, Don't Drown” is used in the National Weather Service meaning it recommends that people get out of the area of a flash flood, rather than trying to cross it. • Many people tend to underestimate the dangers of flash floods. What makes flash floods most dangerous is their sudden nature and fast moving water
Flash Flood Safety • Flash Floods are the #1 thunderstorm –related killer. • Most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles. • Moving water 2-3 feet deep will carry away most vehicles. • Keep children away from creeks and washes when heavy rain is in the area. • Be especially carful at night when water depth and road conditions are harder to see. • Move to higher ground.

Colorado Flash Flood of September 2013 • During the week starting on September 9, 2013, a slow-moving cold front stalled over Colorado, clashing with warm humid monsoonal air from the south.
