DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERINGELECTENG700/COMPSYS700/SOFTENG700 Introduction to Final Year Project 2012
Speed Matching Students who have not yet found a partner should step down to the front of the theatre now
Part 4 Project Problems Project Administrator: Dr George Coghill Room 303.157, g.coghill@auckland.ac.nz
OVERVIEW What is Project? How do Projects operate? What effort is required? How is Project assessed? What do I do now? Additional points
WHAT IS PROJECT? Culmination of design theme in BE Students undertake a project in pairs on a topic approved by the Department Starts early March, finishes middle of September Weighted at 30 points out of 120 for the year
How do Projects Operate • Projects assigned at start of semester one • Weekly meetings with supervisor • First deliverable • Interim Report (due 7 May 2012) • Semester 1 Exams • Inter-semester break • Finish off work on implementation • Write Final Report
How do Projects Operate (contd) • Second deliverable • Conference/Seminar (presentations 6/7 Sept 2012) • Third deliverable • Final Report Submission (10 Sept 2012) • Fourth deliverable • Exhibition Day (14 Sept 2012) • Fifth deliverable • Compendium (21 Sept 2012)
What effort is required? All students will be expected to spend, on average, about 10 hours per week throughout the duration of Project Normally, you should meet your supervisor on a weekly basis
How is project assessed? There are five components for which a formal grade is awarded: Interim Report ( worth 10%) Conference/Seminar ( worth 7.5%) Final Report ( worth 45%) Exhibition ( worth 7.5%) Implementation and Compendium (assessed throughout project, worth 30%)
How is Project Assessed? (contd) • Each component is assessed by at least two members of the academic staff • All students are assessed individually for each component • 70% of the final grade comes from your ability to • Communicate your ideas to others • Communicate your understanding of the Project as a whole • Give an appropriate, detailed account of the work undertaken • 30% of the final grade (Implementation) • Assesses the degree of application of the student to the project • Quantifies the quality of the work undertaken • Is awarded jointly by the Project Supervisor and the Second Examiner
Project Requirements To obtain a pass in the papers ELECTENG700A/B, COMPSYS700A/B or SOFTENG700A/B and in some cases MECHENG762, students MUST gain both a passing mark in implementation and a passing mark overall Students who fail Interim Report and/or Interim Implementation WILL be interviewed. The interview will be conducted by both the Project Coordinator and HoD. Each project member must undertake a peer assessment of the other member. The peer assessment marks submitted by individuals will remain strictly confidential.
Project Resourcing It is expected that all groups will behave in a professional manner Physical resources must be shared Equipment must not be moved from laboratory to laboratory, or outside the Department, without authorization All groups are expected to exercise a degree of self reliance during the project - excessive reliance on technical support may detrimentally affect implementation grades Look at the PurchasingProcedures2011 file. There are also Purchasing and Component order forms. These files are in the Project Documentation folder https://apps.foe.auckland.ac.nz/p4p/ece/downloads/
Plagiarism - Beware • The inclusion of information/ideas to a limited extent and with appropriate referencing is appropriate • The inclusion of • unreferenced material; or • excessive amounts of material not written by the author is regarded as plagiarism • The University takes a very dim view of such acts and if any cases are detected, then referral to the University Discipline Committee will be made
Additional Points Use your initiative! A consistent, steady effort is essential for success Start early - last minute efforts do not work! Keep your workload balanced Make good use of the inter-semester break Use a logbook
