Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) • Safer imaging techniques that use magnetic waves instead of X rays: • The magnetic field lines up the protons in the patient’s tissues. • A beam of radio waves spins these protons. • Signals are picked up by a receiver in the scanner. They are processed by the computer to create images of the body.

50. Ultrasound Machines • Subjects the body to high-frequency sound pulses using a probe. • The probe picks up reflected sound waves that are then processed by a computer to produce a photograph or moving image. • The probe is moved along the surface of the body or angled to obtain different images.
