THE ASMS TASK FORCE – INTRODUCTION (1) • ASMS = Advanced Satellite Mobile Systems = 3G and beyond • An initiative of EC and ESA • Founded March 2001 • Industry-led • More than 40 members ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 1
THE ASMS TASK FORCE – INTRODUCTION (2) • Members include manufacturers, operators, service providers, research organisations, academic institutions, mobile industry specialists, users • EC and ESA are active advisors • Task Force has global perspective ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 2
ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE • MoU • vision statement • reports on R&D requirements and on regulatory issues • analysis of system architectures • initial study of spectrum requirements ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 3
THE ASMS TASK FORCE - STRUCTURE • 6 Working Groups: reporting to the Steering Panel, responsible for: Technology, R&D Market development Trials & demonstrations Regulation Standards External relations • Steering Panel meets 4 times per year ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 4
THE ASMS TASK FORCE - VISION & PURPOSE • Build on past and present experience with mobile satellite systems • Maintain Europe's position as a world leader in the manufacture and operation of satellite mobile systems, and the provision of satellite mobile services to end-users • Ensure that mobile satellite communications is developed in a manner which is consistent worldwide ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 5
ACTIONS TO GROW THE MARKET • Extend existing niche Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) towards larger capacity, higher bit rates, lower equipment cost and lower usage charges. Initial targets are the existing maritime, aeronautical and land mobile markets. • Develop Direct Mobile Multicasting & Broadcasting, addressing mainly the consumer market, as well specific corporate markets, as a complementary overlay to terrestrial networks. • Extend wireless mobile terrestrial networks: i.e. coverage extension, coverage completion, global roaming and rapid deployment. ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 6
THE ASMS TASK FORCE - CURRENT PRIORITIES (1) • Retention & utilisation of current MSS & SDAB allocations; extension of current L Band MSS allocation; forecasting longer term spectrum requirements. • Developing innovative technology solutions through R&D activities co-ordinated with relevant EC and ESA programmes. • Combining broadcast, point-to-point and navigation systems to provide a complete range of mobile services. ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 7
THE ASMS TASK FORCE - CURRENT PRIORITIES (2) • Demonstrating the advanced mobile satcom business case. • Ensuring that standards development activity allows for the satellite dimension, and that standards are open. • Developing awareness of future mobile satellite capabilities; engaging with interested players ASMS TF – 10th CEPT Conference - Page 8
