IDOT Commitment to the Environment “We provide safe, cost-effective transportation for Illinois in ways that enhance quality of life, promote economic prosperity, and demonstrate respect for our environment.” -IDOT Mission Statement
How is IDOT “Green Friendly” ? • Environmental Initiatives • E-85/Biodiesel Fuel • “Weigh in Motion” System • D. Other “Green Friendly” Projects • E. Recycling
A. Environmental Initiatives • Annual Tree Seedling Program & Tree Replacement • Roadside Beautification Program • Wetland Banks & Restoration • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) • Erosion and Sediment Control
Annual Tree Seedling Program & Tree Replacement How do trees contribute to our roadside environment? • Aesthetics and wildlife habitat • Screen objectionable views • Provide a windbreak for open rural areas • Provide shade for urban heat reduction • Enhance air quality
The IDOT and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources established an agreement for habitat restoration in the mid 1970’s. Annual Tree Seedling Program Morris Wetland Mitigation Bank

2. Roadside Beautification Program • Establish wildflower areas • Protect grasslands and eco-habitats • Reduce mowing efforts • Reduce storm water runoff
3. Wetland Banks & Restoration The IDOT is currently constructing and/or monitoring three wetland bank sites and nearly twenty wetland mitigation sites. Orangeville Wetland Mitigation Site
4. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Integrated Pest Management is the process of targeting specific species rather than blanket spraying. Selective Weed Management
5. Erosion and Sediment Control The IDOT spends over $15 million annually on temporary and permanent best management practices. Ditch Checks and Turf Reinforcement Mat Erosion Control Blanket
B. E-85/Biodiesel Fuels IDOT participates in multi-agency programs to encourage the use of E-85 and Biodiesel fuel by: • Providing E-85/Biodiesel fuel location maps in rest areas and on the IDOT website. • Installing signs at fueling stations, interstates and off ramps across the state. • 3. Equipping IDOT vehicles with stickers to alert the public.
E-85/Biodiesel Fuel E-85/Biodiesel Location Map • Signs • Vehicle Sticker
E-85/Biodiesel Fuel • Supports American agriculture and is a renewable source of energy.
Biodiesel Fuel • Is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and is safer then conventional diesel.
Biodiesel Fuel • Can be used in almost any diesel engine • with little or no modification. • Helps to reduce our • dependency on • foreign oil.
E-85 The Escape Hybrid E85 produces about 25% less carbon dioxide than the gasoline-fueled Escape Hybrid.
C. “Weigh in Motion” System The “Weigh in Motion” system allows truck drivers to use Pre-Pass Transponders to communicate with weigh stations. The system is currently used in 20 locations throughout the State of Illinois. Weigh in Motion System Locations in Illinois
“Weigh in Motion” System • Reduces Emissions • Saves on Fuel • Improves Safety
D. Other IDOT “Green Friendly” Projects • Traffic signal LED lamp conversion Veteran’s Parkway – Bloomington, IL
Other IDOT “Green Friendly” Projects • Retrofit some state vehicles to reduce emissions • Idling restrictions on construction equipment • Low sulfur fuel requirements
Other IDOT “Green Friendly” Projects • Retro-reflective sign sheeting Signs with Lighting Signs with Retro-Reflective Sheeting
E. Recycling Programs IDOT recycles how? • Use of re-refind motor oil in all state vehicles. • Use of re-capped tires as allowed by federal regulations. • Established and participate in a scrap rubber program to collect and recycle used tires. • Central Sign Shop utilizes the recycling program to reduce trash in landfills.
