Shakespeare's Theater: The Globe“Totus mundus agit histrionem”(the whole world is a playhouse) Created By: Melina Barry & Taylor Shepard
History • Decision to build in 1598 due to end of lease on the Blackfriars Theater in 1597 • Completed and opened in 1599 • Built by Cuthbert Burbage
Location • Located near the river Thames in an outlying district called Southwark • Southwark had a bad reputation and not the place to find respectable people
Advertising/Cost • Announce grand opening- flew a flag with Hercules carrying a Globe on his shoulders • To stand in the yard it cost 1 penny (10% of a worker’s daily wage) • To sit in one of the three circular galleries it cost 2 pennies
Appearance • Large circular structure that was three stories high • Small straw hatched roof on partially covering the building • Built from oak, deal, and playhouse frames • Stage was 5 feet high, 44 feet wide, and 26 feet long • Three rows of seating wrapped around interior
Tragedy Strikes • Performance of Henry VIII on June 29, 1613, canon fired during play and set the roof on fire • Rebuilt in 1614 on opposite of Thames river • Instead of straw there was now a tile roof
End of an Era • 1642- Puritanical forces in England claimed that playhouses were not a place of laughter but rather of evil sin • 1644- The Globe playhouse was taken down
Today’s Playhouse • Completed in 1966 • Exits were enlarged to accommodate fire regulations • Different location but nearby the original one
