Non-Farming Activities • Handy Craft- Baskets, Utensils, Pots, Bricks, Bullock-carts etc. • Shopkeepers and Traders – Tea shop, Tailor shop, Seeds and fertilizer shop, Dhaba • Services- Blacksmith, Nurse, Teacher, Washer man, Weaver, Barber, Cycle repair mechanic
Agriculture Dependant Mohan has 12 big pieces of agricultural land. He gives one piece to Shyam on a promise of Rs.5000. Shyam also buys some seeds from the shop which Mohan owns on a loan of Rs. 1000. Also, Shyam appoints two Laborers (Bittoo & Babloo) to work on his field and pays them off on hourly basis. After the crop is harvested, out of 10 bags of rice Shyam keeps 6 bags for his consumption and gives 4 bags to Mohan in lesser price than market. Why do you think so? Shyam had taken the land for Rs. 5000 and seeds for Rs. 1000. He has to return this money to Mohan. He also thinks that he has been obliged by Mohan who is a big farmer. He gives 4 rice bags to Mohan in lesser price than market and doesn’t say anything so that next time also he could take land and seeds from Mohan on loan. Also, Mohan sells this rice in cities at much higher price and earns more money. Landless laborers appointed by Shyam Land given to Shyam Mohan’s Land
Three Types of Farmers Large Farmers – Big farming lands (Mohan) Other business like mills, seeds and fertilizer shops etc Very rich Middle Farmers – Small farming land (Shyam) Limited amount of crops grown Dependant on Large Farmers for loans to buy seeds, fertilizers etc. Keeps some grown crops for their use and sell the rest for money Landless Laborers –Do not have their own land (Bitto & Babloo) Work on other’s land Paid according to the number of hours they work

Activity 1- Handout If the season to grow rice starts from July when the land is prepared for sowing and ends in December when the crop is harvested. Then, Imagine yourself as a farmer who works in a Paddy farm throughout the season. • During which months will you be employed? • During which months will you be unemployed? • What are the jobs you can take up during these months? • According to you where will you have better job opportunities, in a village or a city and why?
