  2. Objective • Identify and discuss the five themes of geography

  3. Location • To study a place, you must find its location • Absolute: Exact position using latitude and longitude coordinates • Example: Washington DC is located at 37°N, 77°W • Relative: Finding a place around other places. • Example: Riyadh is located 953 km from Mecca

  4. Place • The mix of human and non human features at a given location • Example: Riyadh is a hot, desert area and is the capital of Saudi Arabia

  5. Region • An area with at least one unifying physical or human feature, such as climate, landforms, population, or history • Example: Manhattan includes the cities of New York, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens. They have many skyscrapers and people within the cities.

  6. Movement • How people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another • Example: Cars made in Germany and shipped and sold in Riyadh

  7. Human – Environment Interaction • How people affect their environment and how their environment affects them. • Example: Riyadh is very hot so people created air conditioning to live comfortably away from the heat.

  8. How to read latitude & longitude • Latitude: Run east to westbut measure north or south • Longitude: Run north to south, but measure eastor west
