  2. Malta is one of the most popular movie settings in the world, and is jocosely called “the mediterranean Mini-Hollywood” by the London Times. In the last 5 years Malta, Gozo and Camino were settings for Blockbuster movies such as U-571, Monte Christo (2001), Troya, Alexander, Gladiator and Munich and also prestigious TV-productions such as BBC’s Byron and Daniel Deronda. The Fishingvillage-setting used by Robert Altman in Popeye (1980) is a popular tourist attraction today, even though the movie was a flop. The wild and unpredictable coastline and the ancient archtiecture of the islands have already doubled as different places in the world – from ancient Rome to Marseille of the 19th century up to Beirut of the 1960s.
