  4. Why this project?Research and writing skills are both part of Missouri’s learning standards and are required assessment items

  5. Why this project?We wanted a project that would:Teach research skillsTeach writing skillsContribute to what the kids knew

  6. Why this project?We chose to combine the research and writing with the National History Day program

  7. What is National History Day?NHD is a year-long education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics.

  8. What is National History Day?Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers based on research related to an annual theme.

  9. What is National History Day?  These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions.For more information:www.nationalhistoryday.orgState NHD organizations

  10. How does the program work?Lots of collaboration between departments and people!

  11. First quarter:Library Skills Reviews: Electronic book searches, database searches and bibliography reviewEnglish: Grammar reviews, cause-and-effect essaysSocial Studies: Discuss NHD Students do pretest

  12. Second quarter:Library: Classes visit weekly; research, thesis statements, outlinesEnglish: Paper organization, writingVideo Production: Begin planning and complete storyboards for documentariesPosttest: Semester final

  13. Third quarter:Social Studies: Classes supervise NHD entriesVideo Production: Complete scripts, create documentariesStudents: Refine papers, performances, and exhibitsBuilding Level: Open house projects are evaluatedRegional Competition: All teachers help students with projects
