  1. The Attempt to Dim the Light Begins [John 18:1-11]

  2. Introduction • Jesus goes to the Garden in the Kidron Valley • It was dark – lanterns and torches

  3. Notes on the Narrative • Weapons (fear of violence) • Cohort falls to the ground (author commentary) 6 When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. (Jn. 18:6 NIV) • Fulfillment in verse nine – Shepherd imagery 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, "I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me." (Jn. 18:9 NRS) • Peter told to put his sword away: Kingdom of God vs. Kingdom of Earth

  4. Light vs. Darkness • Jesus spent the week exposing the darkness • He went after the religious leadership, not Roman leadership • Evil inclination had infected the religious leadership • Jesus wanted “reform” • Darkness needed Jesus silent

  5. For Us Today • Darkness will always attempt to shut down the Light • Darkness will use any resource available to win • There are times when it appears that Darkness will win • Never give up hope
