Pre-rabbinic teachers of the Scripture • Most ancient people had Scribes for the transmission of religious and government texts/documents to the next generation • Hebrew scribe had a detailed procedure for copying Scripture • Their authority was originally given to them by the people • Afterwards the Scribes gave authority for biblical teaching and interpretation Historical view Who were the Scribes? 3

For us Today • Conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount • Metaphor – how are you building your life? • On Sand – on a weak set of doctrine, perhaps unethical? • On Rock – on a strong set of doctrine and ethical • Jesus offers a way to live that is ethical and moral • The sermon on the Mount is a guide to living in a way that please the LORD • There are rewards to clean living 5
