Biblical Culture • Lunatics lived in cemeteries • Pigs were an abomination • Two men: bipolar universe (good vs. evil) • When people changed religions they dropped the practices of the previous religion • Economy of the Decapolis was based on pig farming
Story Telling • Why the pigs? • In Jesus’ day to become a follower meant a religious conversion to Judaism • Probably the two men prayers to their false gods to know avail • Jesus cured them • They wanted to be His disciples • They gave up eating pigs, thus killing them • The town’s people didn’t want to loose their livelihood, so they told Jesus to leave
For us today • Cost of discipleship is giving up something anti-biblical • What did you give up? • Adults joining the faith example • For those who grew up in church • Those who say they are disciples but don’t give up anything • God knows your heart
