  1. First Impressions Mark 1:1-8

  2. Introduction • Epiphany – the introduction of Jesus to the world • Location – in the Wilderness at the Jordan River near Jerusalem • No fanfare, no cheering, no angels, a simple story that is jam-packed with information • Semitic writers could say little because their listeners knew the Torah and Prophets

  3. Biblical Echoes 10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; • Isaiah 64:1 (NAS95S)  Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at Your presence — 2 As fire kindles the brushwood, as fire causes water to boil — To make Your name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your presence! • Mark asks the question – is this peasant from Nazareth the Isaiah Messiah?

  4. Biblical Echoes 11 and a voice came out of the heavens: "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.“ [VOICE FROM HEAVEN] • Isaiah 42:1 (NAS95S) "Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. • Mark is asking if Jesus is the servant in the Servant's Song (not the suffering servant who is a different Isaiah song)

  5. Biblical Echoes 11 and a voice came out of the heavens: "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.“ [Beloved Son] • Psalms 2:7 (NAS95S) "I will surely tell of the 1decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, today I have begotten You. • Mark is equating Jesus to King David. • "You are my son" means that David became the King because of the LORD's actions, not by the election of men. The LORD chose David because he desired to serve the LORD.

  6. Biblical Points • Jesus was from Nazareth – what does this tell us about Him? • Why 40 days in the Wilderness? • What does the reference to wild animals and angels mean?

  7. For Us Today • Do you create first impressions when you meet strangers? • Why do we do this? • Putting aside all you know about Jesus, what impression did Mark leave? • Will you reconsider some of your first impressions about people?
