Traditions of the Messiah Isaiah 53
Introduction • Why is this important? • ‘mashiach’ Messiah • Means “anointed one for God’s service”
Son of david • David Covenant 16 "Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.“ (2 Sam. 7:16 NAU) • David in Yeshua’s genealogy 6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. (Matt. 1:6 NAU)
Son of david continued 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon (Lk. 3:31-32 NAU) Note that Luke does the genealogy backwards
Son of David • In Yeshua’ day “son of David” also means “the Messiah had a love for God like David did” • Perhaps that is why Mark and John do not include a genealogy?
Son of man 13 "I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. (Dan. 7:13 NAU) • Son of Man is fully developed in Ezekiel • Restoration of the kingdom of Israel by the Son of Man • Ezekiel prophecy from the Dry Bones in the Valley chapter
Restoration of the kingdom • Started during the Babylonian Exile • Hebrews longs to return to the Promised Land • Is connected to the “son of man” indirectly • Difference: Army will do it – Judas Iscariot • Ushering in a new kingdom - Paul
Suffering Servant • WAS NOT a tradition in Yeshua’ day • Since Yeshua did not fulfill the other traditions Christians needed to find a prophecy that fit. • Suffering servant fits perfectly
For Us today • An underlying task of the Messiah in all the traditions is that the Messiah will bring people back to God • A way to explain Yeshua to a non-Christian is through Isaiah 53 (short Gospel) • The Kingdom of God that Yeshua initiated is Spiritually based
