  2. PREACH THE WORD 2 Timothy 4: 1-5

  3. “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

  4. PREACH THE WORD!

  5. Preparing to preach

  6. Preparing to preach

  7. Preparing to preach

  8. The divine dimension in preaching For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. (1 Thessalonians 1:4-5)

  9. The human dimension in preaching We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labour, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me. (Colossians 1:28-29)

  10. The preacher’s privilege “It is an enormous privilege to be called to preach in the contemporary world, and to be a Biblical expositor! For one stands in the pulpit with God’s Word in his hands, God’s Spirit in his heart, God’s people before his eyes, waiting expectantly for God’s voice to be heard and obeyed.” John R.W. Stott, “Christian Preaching in the Contemporary World,” Bibliotheca Sacra 145:580 (October-December 1988): 370

  11. PREPARING TO PREACH

  12. The preparation of the preacher "The greatestneed of my people is my personal holiness.” "Study universal holiness of life. Your whole usefulness depends on this, for your sermons last but an hour or two; your life preaches all the week. If Satan can only make a covetous minister a lover of praise, of pleasure, of good eating, he has ruined your ministry. Give yourself to prayer, and get your texts, your thoughts, your words from God. Luther spent his best three hours in prayer” (Robert Murray M’Cheyne)

  13. THE PREPARATION OF THE SERMON Three important stages

  14. STAGE 1. Choosing the subject “And, Father, I ask Thee now for a good text to accompany this fantastic story.”

  15. STAGE 1. Choosing the subject • Start with the text - in its context • “A text without a context is a pretext for a proof-text” (D.A. Carson) • in the Bible • in the Bible story-line

  16. STAGE 1: Choosing the subject • A text • Romans 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life inChrist Jesus our Lord. • Romans 6:15-23 • A topic • “Overcoming pride” • “Baptism”

  17. STAGE 1. Choosing the subject • A single sermon • Jonah 1:4-6 • (“When God sends a storm”) • A sermon series • Studies in the Book of Jonah • (“Running away from the Lord”) • “Seven deadly sins”

  18. STAGE 1. Choosing the subject • Factors determining • how and what you preach: • Christians and/or non-Christians? • level of understanding/Biblical literacy • Know your audience!

  19. STAGE 2. Doing the spade-work • Goal – to discover • what the original author intended to communicate • what God by his Spirit intended to communicate through the human voice/pen of the author • Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21) • a single sermon or a sermon series

  20. STAGE 2. Doing the spade-work • Two important questions: • 1. What does it mean? (explanation) • 2. What must I/we do? (application)

  21. STAGE 2. Doing the spade-work • Research/study: • 1. Different Bible translations • • from literal (focus on the form) • • to idiomatic (focus on the meaning) •   2. Books (plus media) • • from commentaries • • to sermons

  22. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon • Four goals: • A title • An introduction • A structure • A conclusion

  23. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon: 1. A title • Three characteristics of a good title • • summarises main point • • memorable • • “attractive” • e.g. Luke 8:40-48 • “Woman with haemorrhage” • “Hoping for healing”

  24. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon: 2. An introduction • “if you don’t strike oil in the first five minutes, stop boring!”

  25. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon: 2. An introduction • Three characteristics • • catches the attention • • introduces the theme • • leads into the title • Creativity! • Accuracy!

  26. “I felt that in preaching the first thing you had to do was to demonstrate to the people that what you were going to do was very relevant and urgently important…I started with the man whom I wanted to listen, the patient. It was a medical approach really – here is a patient, a person in trouble, an ignorant man who has been to the quacks, and so I deal with all that in the introduction. I wanted to get to the listener and then come to my exposition.” (Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

  27. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon: 3. A structure • Three essentials • • based on the text • • help to understanding • • easy to follow

  28. STAGE 3. Creating the sermon: 4. A conclusion Three features • summarises the main point • calls for a response • finishes succinctly

  29. (Lawrence O. Richards, Creative Bible Teaching, Moody Press, 1976.)

  30. "Fabrice is critically ill. The next 24 hours are going to be absolutely crucial. "We've obviously been inundated with people wishing him well and we hope that if everybody can pray strongly tonight that Fabrice is able to recover.”

  31. "Praying for you Fab. Hope he's OK. Thoughts with him and his family." (Stuart Holden) Pray for Fab. God willing he will pull through.“ (Jermain Defoe) "Hope Fabrice Muamba is OK. Praying for him and his family. Still in shock." (Wayne Rooney) "Doesn't matter who you support. Doesn't matter if you aren't a football fan. Doesn't matter if you aren't religious. Pray for Fabrice Muamba." (Kyle Walker)

  32. "God is in control. Please keep fmuamba in your prayers ... Please keep praying for fmuamba, it's really helping, I can feel it xx." All your prayers are working people thank u so so much. Every prayer makes him stronger. To God be the glory," she said.

  33. Paulc156 Here we have an opportunity to test the efficacy of prayer. There are literally thousands of people praying for Muamba [I hope rather than pray] to recover. A full recovery [playing next season] would be miraculous [possibly] whereas a partial recovery, [he survives but in a bad state of health with little prospect for further recovery] would be nothing of the sort. In any case I'm hoping for him.

  34. PRAYER AND FAITH(Mark 9:14-29) • NO FAITH “O unbelieving generation, Jesus replied, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?” (verses 19) “Unbelief” = no faith • inJesus • despite allthe evidence

  35. PRAYER AND FAITH(Mark 9:14-29) 2. PARTIAL FAITH Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (verse 24)

  36. PRAYER AND FAITH(Mark 9:14-29) 3. EFFECTIVE FAITH The question: After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn't we drive it out?” (verse 28) The answer: He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” (verse 29) Prayerlessnessleads to powerlessness

  37. “I suppose if you are ever going to use the term ‘miraculous’ I suppose it could be used here.” (Dr Andrew Deaner)

  38. SAVINGPRAYER AND FAITH “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

  39. Group Exercise 1: Luke 2:8-20 1. This nativity story is unique to Luke’s Gospel. How does it highlight and reinforce Luke’s main purpose and theme in writing his Gospel? 2. This is the third appearance of an angel in Luke’s account (see Luke 1:5ff. & 1:26ff). What is the significance of these appearances (and others in the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament)? 3. How might the perception of shepherds in our own culture influence (and mislead?) us in our understanding of the shepherds from this story in1st century Palestinian culture? 4. How does the reaction of the shepherds and of Mary to this incident anticipate and prepare for the events that follow in Luke’s Gospel? 5. This is one of the best known stories in the Bible. How might you introduce and preach it in such a way that breaks through the traditional images and brings home Luke’s message with fresh impact? Can you suggest an appropriate title?

  40. Why Four Gospels? “Why Four Gospels?” by Donald Bridge Christian Focus Publications, 1996

  41. Matthew Written for Jews Most structured Who is Jesus? Jesus: the King of the nations “Worship him!”

  42. Mark Written for Romans Most dramatic What did Jesus do? Jesus: the Son of God “Follow him!”

  43. Luke Written for Greeks Most thematic What is Jesus like? Jesus - the Saviour of the world “Love him!”

  44. John Written for Christians Most theological Why did Jesus come? Jesus - the Christ, the Son of God “Believe in him!”

  45. Preaching from the Gospels The distinctive character of each Gospel: • what is the target audience? • what material is unique to this Gospel? • what is omitted from shared Gospel material? • what is shared with other Gospels? • where is it placed in the Gospel? • how does it relate to its immediate context? • how does it relate to the wider context of the whole Gospel? • why?
