What is a musical interval? • The word interval means “space between” • A musical interval is the distance separating any two tones, specifying how much higher or lower the two pitches are relative to one another (Herder, 2000)
How to measure an interval • The standard unit to measure the distance between two pitches is the half-step • On the keyboard • A half-step is the distance between any key and its closest neighboring key • This can be a black or a white key
Why recognize intervals? • Recognizing intervals on printed music • Necessary for sight singing • Recognizing intervals by ear • Necessary for playing by ear
Simple Intervals • Prime or Unison • This is the same note played twice • It does not go up or down
Major 3rd • Sounds like the first two notes of • Michael Row the Boat ashore
Perfect 5th • Sounds like beginning of • Twinkle twinkle little star
