Unit 3 Histology. Esophagus, Stomach, Duodenum, Jejunum, Colon, Liver, Spleen, Kidney, Pancreas. Esophagus (stratified squamous epithelium, surrounded by dense mucosa layer). Stomach (folded mucosa layer with lots of pits for secretion of mucous and acid).

  1. Unit 3 Histology Esophagus, Stomach, Duodenum, Jejunum, Colon, Liver, Spleen, Kidney, Pancreas

  2. Esophagus (stratified squamous epithelium, surrounded by dense mucosa layer)

  3. Stomach (folded mucosa layer with lots of pits for secretion of mucous and acid)

  4. Duodenum (finger-like villi covered in simple columnar epithelium. Spongy mucosa underneath)

  5. Jejunum (very long villi, thick muscle layers surrounding outside)

  6. Colon (few individual villi, lots of goblet cells of thick mucosa layer. Also see thick muscular wall)

  7. Liver (lots of small cells surrounding unlined ducts. The liver is primarily exocrine in function)

  8. Pancreas (dark exocrine cells with isolated light-pink endocrine cells. Light areas are ‘islets of Langerhans’)

  9. Kidney (small tubules lined with cuboidal cells)

  10. Spleen (‘red pulp’ and ‘white pulp’ cells surrounding nodules as in the center of this slide. Cells here produce lymphocytes)
