Personal Learning Experiences • Early Years • Family • Grandfathers workshop • Science experiments book • Kiva Elementary- Gifted program • Mohave Middle School- Shop class • High School • Practical Design class • Making long boards • Scouts • College • Model building as architecture major • Study abroad • Mech. Engineering labs
Aspirations • Going into college- had no idea • Wanted to build/design “things” • Now have plenty of opportunities and background knowledge but still don’t know exactly what I’m passionate about • Too busy with school to explore everything • IW could have provided means to explore and get introduced to a wide range of interests.
Inventioneering Aspirations • Is is possible (for me, at ASU) to build a robotic glove with dexterity and grip near identical to the human hand? • Resources/Timeframe: • Materials, machines to manufacture components • Knowledge about where to get these materials • Money to get them • Expert Mentors • More time outside of class than I have (years) • Background starting skills • ME classes: circuits, mechanical design, mechanisms, sensors and controls
Robot glove learning objectives • Human Machine Interaction • Sensors and controls, circuitry- how seamlessly glove would react to hand movements. “Natural feel” • Structural Design • How strong is it? What forces can it withstand/generate? • Is the size and range of movement effective? • Evaluation • Physical product • Analysis of design process
Exceptional and Essential IW Experiences • Inspirational Videos • Pushing boundaries of what is possible • Emphasize creativity within a subject • Local Resources- central level 1 space • Face to face, hands on, and personalized mentorship • Module Library and Pages • Organized, and easy to work through based on skill level
IW Student Organization • Short Term Objectives • Involve and connect existing ASU clubs/organizations • Club/organization base modules • Foster Collaboration • Create contacts with ASU facilities • Get a strong, active member base • Home base facility • Long Term Objectives • Industry Training Programs • Funding for independent student research • Campus-wide recognition • Alumni Network
IW Student Organization • Opportunities • Existing ASU infrastructure and knowledge • Student, faculty, industry interest • Challenges • Member motivation and participation • Funding • Organization and space
IW Student Organization- what to do? • Finish application • Need motivated officers • Help writing constitution • Get Members and Advertise- why join IW? • Ambassadors from existing clubs • Organize/summarize existing club expertise • Train new club members • Collaborate and expand on ideas • Competition • General student population • Explore interests • networking • ASU facilities, Industry • Get student interest, more potential hiring candidates • Training programs • New ideas and research • Club meetings and events • Meeting Space (just for presentations) • Organized system to develop modules and get funding • Recognition system
