  2. Unit Outline

  3. Static Electricity: Word Development • Focus: Knowledge with some Communication • Activity: review scientific terminologies relating to statics while incorporating literacy. • Word development worksheet and story book • Assessment: a checklist upon completion of the booklet for a total of 10 marks word development worksheet.pub

  4. Board Game Expo! • Focus: Application, Knowledge, Communication • Activity: • Teams of 3 design and build the best electronic board game to challenge and review electricity material • Teams submit and play games in the expo • Assessment: • Rubric (K,C,A) • Rating scales, comments • Self/Peer Group evaluation • Peer evaluation (Board game tester)

  5. Timeline of Project Goals DAY What is due? • 1 Planning Day Proposal • 2 Construction Day Board game Circuit diagram • 3 Game Day

  6. Timeline of Project Goals DAY What is due? • 1 Planning Day Proposal • 2 Construction Day Board game Circuit diagram • 3 Board Game Expo!

  7. Draw the following: Illustration of Circuits Circuit Diagram Comments:

  8. Rubric • K/U • -Circuit diagram accuracy, works in theory • Questions of appropriate content/difficulty • A • Circuits work • Safety • Durability and quality of construction • C • -Clear instructions • -Language skills • -Circuit diagram symbols

  9. Getting 3 Light Bulbs to Light Differently • Focus: Inquiry based but also Knowledge and Communication • Activities: Use website to allow students to find the 4 different methods to get a light bulb to glow differently and take different measurements. (V, I, and R) Website: http://phet.colorado.edu/new/simulations/sims.php?sim=Circuit_Construction_Kit_DC_Only Handouts KICA Inquiry\KICA - Inquiry Activity 1 Crystal's edit.doc • Assessment and Evaluation: Students will be evaluation for the quality of their focus questions, records, and explanation using a marking scheme.

  10. Library – Alternative Energy Sources • Focus: Application with Communication. • Activity: Placed in teams of 3 and must choose a model to be the Architect for. They must find the electrical demands for that model and find alternative energy sources that could be used. • Assessment: 50% on Research and 50% on Presentation. • Rubric, Group and Peer Evaluation. • KICA Communication\KICA - Sources.pub • KICA Communication\KICA Rubric.pub

  11. Task • In groups of 2 or 3 make a Simple Circuit using the following: • One load (buzzer/light) • Wire (at least 3 pieces) • One battery • 1 Switch (make it yourself using cardboard and a conductor) • Application: with another group try and modify your circuits to make a larger circuit. • Think of 5 things your circuit could be used for?

  12. Conclusion • We TRIED!!!!! • Students will have very different backgrounds (6th grade) • You might need to modify some activities (easier/harder) for the various levels. • You can have fun with this unit! (fire in the classroom with a short circuit!)
