Charter for the UV-Optical Detector Working Group • The charge to the Working Group is: • To recommend a roadmap for the research and technology developments needed to insure that detectors for the UV-Optical spectral region are available to achieve the scientific goals of missions defined in the Origins, SEU and SEC Theme Roadmaps, as well as in the NAS Decadal Survey for 2000 - 2010.

Charter for the UV-Optical Detector Working Group • Assess current state of design & fabrication • what groups are active, how healthy is the US capability, what defines today’s state-of-the-art ? • Assess current state of research & development • what groups are involved, what are likely future performance characteristics, key milestones ? • Evaluate detector requirements associated with NASA Roadmaps & Decadal Survey • what performance capabilities are envisaged ? • Evaluate compatibility of detector technology with foreseen missions

Schedule for the Detector Working Group Report • First draft due by end of February 2001 • to the UV/Visible Discipline Scientists and available on web • Draft Report to the Origins/SEU/SEC Subcommittees by Spring 2001 • to be presented to Theme Directors • Final report “White Paper” by August 2001

Science Drivers • Detectors Roadmap study continues the work done by the UV-Optical Working Group in their 1999 report, which looked ahead to SUVO • Primary science drivers for the future of UV-Optical astrophysics require medium to high resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy and wide-field UV-optical imaging of faint extragalactic sources • quote from the White Paper of the UV-Optical Working Group, led by Mike Shull (1999)

Science Drivers • Substantial improvements in detector performance are needed to realize the goals for SUVO - especially in the ultraviolet • MCPs - improve QE, increase format size • CCDs - increase format, reduce read-noise • development of larger band-gap semi-conductors, such as AlGaN and diamond, especially for NUV • development of entirely new detectors, STJs and TESs and their associated technologies

  9. Science Drivers - Final comments • there are NO UV-optical missions for new starts in this decade, and to lead up to SUVO (in 2015) • this may be a problem in the development of advanced detectors, and to sustain the level of effort needed • ladder with rungs at the bottom (HST) and the top (SUVO) but nothing in between • Need a way to get to SUVO
