The Aral sea The disappearing sea
Location of the Aral Sea • The Aral sea is located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the old USSR.
Why was the environment developed? • History The area was developed as the communist USSR needed to industrialise to catch up with the west as it was an almost backwards country at the time. To do this successfully Russia needed to industrialise. The leader of the USSR (comrade Stalin) decided the best way in which to do this was to set up industrial cities in such places as Siberia. These cities needed to be fed and materials such as cotton needed to be sent to the areas. As a result, areas like the Aral sea were used to crow such things as cotton in order for Russia to industrialise.
Environment and climate of the Aral Sea • The climate of the area surrounding the Aral Sea is hot and dry. This means that natural conditions such as evaporation are going to add to the human interventions making the disappearance of the Aral sea worse. • The area that the Aral sea is located in has long, hot summers and very mild, short winters.
Why was water management necessary? • As water is being removed from the rivers for cotton trading, less water is reaching the Aral sea which means it is rapidly getting smaller. This has very negative effects on the people that live near by the river and the sea.
Advantages • The growth of the cotton industries bring employment and money to the villages around the sea. However most of the industry that need the cotton are not in the area so therefore the money and the work seem to leave the area. • The Villages do not need to worry about importing their cotton. • Makes the area self sufficient in farming • Conquer a hostile environment.
Disadvantages • Less water can be used for drinking and cleaning etc. This would result in diseases and in some cases death. • The fishing trade in the Aral sea is destroyed as the sea becomes rapidly smaller. • The fertilisers from the growth of cotton turn the fresh water into salt water. This kills certain fish and makes the water undrinkable. • People had to move from their homes to be closer to the water they needed to survive on even though they are aware that they will have to move again.
