Why do community service? • Organizations need your help. • Feels good. • Several hours helps students get into universities and earn scholarships. • Grow personally (take on leadership roles if possible). • 100 + hours = extra points on a UC application. • 200+ hours = lots of extra points on a UC application.
Assignment: • Complete ____ hours of community service this semester. • 10% of your AVID grade and is your final in the class. • Signed hours are due Monday, June 4th. • Note – the required AVID hours a semester are not enough to get extra points on your college application. Do more if you can.
Ideas • Animal shelters (Escondido, Helen Woodward, Carlsbad, Oceanside) • MHHS Library • San Marcos Library • Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos • Panorama Club • Senior Center (Silvergate by SMHS, etc.) • Church Activities • Headstart (next to SMMS) • Help a teacher (here or a former teacher) • Tutor younger students • Go back to your old AVID class and help with tutorials (when you can). • Key Club at MHHS is dedicated to community service • Interact Club is dedicated to community service

How many hours are you planning on completing this semester? What is your goal? • Why: Why did you choose this particular group/ organization? • How: How will you do the community service? Do you have to sign up for any kind of training? How will you get there? How will you contact the person in charge?
