If Not Me, Then Who? The Leadership Role of Asking Goal: To empower your leadership and discipleship to include the art of “asking”!
Practice… • Ask someone what time it is? • Ask someone for gum? • Ask someone for a pencil? • Ask someone to open a window? • Ask someone for $10 for lunch? • Ask someone to meet for lunch? • Ask someone to come to church? • Ask for a donation of baked goods?
IT IS YOU! • Why is asking for money so different? • Why don’t donors leave gifts to the church? • What do we need to learn to be comfortable with the discipleship role of “asking”?
Traits of Good Askers • Already support the project • Listen more than speak • Able to pick up clues • Positive energy • Expectation of God’s miracles
Self Preparation • Do I believe in the cause? • Am I rested and relaxed? • Am I ready to listen open-mindedly? • Am I prepared for questions? • Have I prayed? Pray again!
Invitational Asking • Go and Make Disciples • Giving and Asking is a Spiritual Activity • Careful preparation prevents problems!
Spiritual Preparation • Know our role in the cosmos – we are vessels, not the living waters! • We are faith-raisers, not fundraisers. • Money follows mission – know the mission! • Let go and let God lead. • Our relationships with others are the places God’s sacred work is done. • Be joyful givers ourselves!
Practical Preparation • Look for prospects – follow relationships • Find a connection or way the donor might connect with the project. • Demonstrate your passion – name your commitment when possible. • Ask for a conversation first – a time to listen. Mode of contact mirrors relationship. • Follow all steps in process, including Thank You
