Statistics • Video game industry makes more money each year then Hollywood. • The American Medical association says 90% of kids today play video games. • As many as 5,000,000 of those kids play so much that doctors are considering it a disorder. • A new study found that nearly 1 in 10 youths who play video games behaved in ways that were similar to other addictive disorders, such as compulsive gambling.

Back Care • To much gaming can also lead to bad back health. • The most common form of RSI, also known as work-related upper limb disorder, is caused by overloading the muscles and nerves in the upper back and neck by spending too long on computers, text messaging or playing on games consoles. • They are spending more time on computers and games and doing less sports.

  6. Deaths Connected to Video Game Addiction (United States) • Press reports in November 2005 state that Gregg J. Kleinmark, 24, plead "guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter". He "left fraternal twins Drew and Bryn Kleinmark unattended in a bathtub for 30 minutes, in order to go three rooms away and play on his Game Boy Advance console(sic)" while "in the mean time, the two ten-months old kids drowned". • Tyrone Spellman, 27,PA, was convicted of third-degree murder for killing his 17-month old daughter in a rage over a broken Xbox. He "killed AlayiahTurman with at least five blows to the head" that "cracked the toddler's skull several times”. • Ohio teen Daniel Petric shot his parents, killing his mother, after they took away his copy of Halo 3 in October 2007. On 16 June 2009, Petric was sentenced to 23 years to life.

Brandon Crisp (Canada) • October 13, 2008, Brandon was involved in an argument with his parents over his obsessive playing of the Xbox 360 video game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, after they took the system away. • Later that day Brandon ran away from home, but his parents let him leave thinking he will come back.

On November 5, hunters discovered Brandon's body in an overgrown area. • An autopsy confirmed the identity of the teen, and also stated that the injuries to the chest area that are consistent with a fall from a tree. • Brandon's story continues to be referenced in discussions about video game addiction and influence, with debate about whether Brandon's obsession with the Call of Duty video game actually was a contributing factor to his death

  10. Deaths Connected to Video Game Addiction (S. Korea) • In 2005, Lee SeungSeopvisited an Internet cafe in the city of Taegu and played StarCaftalmost continuously for fifty hours. He went into cardiac arrest, and died at a local hospital. A friend reported: "...he was a game addict. We all knew about it. He couldn't stop himself." About six weeks before his death, his girlfriend, also an avid gamer, broke up with him, and he had been fired from his job for repeated tardiness.

  11. Treatment • McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts has set up "Computer Addiction Services". • Gamers may seek services at generalized addiction support centers • Online Gamers Anonymous, an American non-profit organization formed in 2002, is a twelve-step, self-help, support and recovery organization for gamers and their loved ones who are suffering from the adverse effects of excessive computer game playing.
