Homework was • Re-read pages 64 to 78. • Be ready for a quiz on the material covering Ecology. Friday will be quick review and whatever time remains will be to prep for the lab. Those with Football will take the quiz next week. • Quiz on Saturday • Lab on Monday
New material • What is a food chain and what is a Food web? • Which is a chain and which is a web? Explain
New material • From the reading, what is phytoplankton? • Floating algae found in the water. • Why do we need to eat? • Serves as fuel for us. • Much of what we eat is either wasted or cannot be used (bones, ligaments, stalks,…) • For example corn. The corn stalk only produces one ear of corn.
New material • It takes a lot of corn to fill us up or an animal. • Each time we consume something energy is lost. • 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. In the process of energy transfer, some energy will dissipate as heat.
New material • Grass gets eaten by the cow. • Loss of energy, about 10% • Takes a lot of grass to feed the cow. • Loss of energy, about 10% • We then eat the cow.
New material • These are food webs
New material • Food chains – series of steps where organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. • In water it can start with algae or bacteria all the way to the largest fish. • Look at page 73 the food chain.
New material • Notice on page 75 the primary producer (autotroph) up to the carnivore. • Why are top predators such as lions or tigers vulnerable to extinction? • They rely heavily on the organisms below them to survive.
New material • Food web demonstrate the complexity of how many different species may use organisms for energy (food).
New material • Decomposers and Detritivores. • Why are sea gulls protected, meaning it is against the law to kill them? Are they endangered? • Scavengers are crucial to removing waste.
