Most of Scotland is mountainous with a rugged landscape, green valleys and deep blue lakes also known as Lochs. • The Highlands of Scotland are largely mountainous, and form the highest ground in the U.K. And make up 60% of northwest Scotland. • Famous highlands are the Great Glen, Grampians, Northwest Highlands and not for getting the highest peak in Great Britain, Ben Nevis. The Lowlands are made up of rolling farmland and high moorland that spans the Central Belt and Eastern Scotland. • The oldest rocks of Scotland are known as the Lewisian gneisses formed 3,000 Ma in what was known as the Precambrian period. • They are among some of the oldest rocks in the world.
