BEFORE THE MOVEMENT • Legal “gay bashing.” • Faced the same discrimination that Latinos, Native Americans, Women, and African Americans did during this time. • Seen as “undesirable” to society. • Ban on employment in some states. • Considered a mental illness until the 1970s.   3. THE SPARK STONEWALL RIOTS • Aggressive police raids on the Stonewall Inn in June of 1969. • Gay’s retaliated and fought back against this discrimination. • This lead to a national rise in “Gay Power.” “Stonewall means fight back!”

  4. THE AFTERMATH GAY LIBERATION FRONT • After Stonewall, the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) was formed. ACTIVISM • Gay pride marches • Trying to get others to “come out” • Partnered with groups like the Black Panthers “I’d rather fight than switch!”

  5. GOALS OF THE MOVEMENT GOALS • Promote human rights • End violence towards gays • End discrimination (including racism and sexism) • End militarism • Transform traditional gender roles • Support publically gay politicians • “Personal privacy” Gay Liberation Front button

LEGACIES LEGACIES • No longer classified as a mental illness (1973) • Government ended its ban on employment of gays (1975) • Effective in changing attitudes • Harvey Milk • first openly gay man elected to public office (1978) • Today, there are openly gay members of Congress • Anything else?
