  2. SCHEMA • Simon BoothProject ManagerCentre for Research and Development in Learning TechnologyUniversity of Stirlingspb1@stir.ac.uk

  3. SCHEMA • Major Partners: • Stirling (lead site) • Oulu (Finland) • Stuttgart (Germany) • Associate Partners: • Örebro (Sweden) • Karlskona (Sweden) • Lapland (Finland)

  4. SCHEMA • Funded under EU TAP (Telematics Application Programme) 4th call for proposals (17-Dec-1996) • Started: 1-Feb-1998 • Ends: 30-Jun-2000 (with conference) • Web: http://www.stir.ac.uk/schema

  5. SCHEMA • Objectives • To develop and evaluate the use of NCs and ISDN for the delivery and support of educational multimedia • To develop and demonstrate a range of multimedia courseware and resourceware designed to meet the needs of professional workers in the community

  6. SCHEMA • Objectives • To evaluate the use of telematics-based multimedia as a means for the dissemination of curriculum material and for the development of collaborative project-based learning • To investigate the use of CMC as a means of providing student support, enhancing group interaction and encouraging the development of a sense of community.

  7. SCHEMA • Objectives • To investigate the feasibility of using the SCHEMA infrastructure as a means of providing access to open and distance learning in remote areas. • To contribute to the methodology of educational and social evaluation.

  8. SCHEMA • Technology • Low-cost network computers (~£270) plus monitor (~£120) or TV • Centrally Managed • Tamper proof (no harddisk -> no local configuration) • Important: our users are at great distance

  9. SCHEMA • Technology • ISDN connectivity • 128kbps • sufficient to deliver multimedia at reasonable speed • Video conferencing

  10. SCHEMA • Technology • Web • Unified interface • Can deliver multimedia: Real Video/Audio, Shockwave, NetShow, etc • Email • News, HyperNews, Webboard • Access to other resources • Learning Environments: WebCT, TopClass

  11. SCHEMA • Learning Environment(s) • TELSI-PRO • PROTO • Both environments driven by educational goals, particularly “constructivist” view • Both can be used interchangeably • Both emphasise collaboration between students • There are technical differences but not our concern

  12. SCHEMA • Subject Area • SCHEMA aims to deliver its learning in the social sciences • The social sciences are an area where technology hasn’t made great inroads (due to discursive nature)

  13. SCHEMA • Deliverables • ODL Modules • Social Research Methods • Local Community Studies • Continuing Professional Development Modules

  14. SCHEMA • Deliverables • Research • Nature of social and learning processes involved in telematics based ODL • Educational • Validated ODL environment • Technology • Telematic multimedia over Euro-ISDN • Robust, easy-to-maintain computing devices

  15. SCHEMA • Innovation • Network Computer • plug-n-play • TV, power & phone • Learning Technology for Social or Caring Sciences • PROTO/TELSI-Pro • CMC
