  2. What is a Brownfield? Brownfields aresitesthathavebeenaffectedby the formeruses of the site orsurroundingland, arederelictorunderused, andmayhavecontaminationproblems. Theyoftenhave a badimageandareoftennotcompetitivecompared to greenfields withoutpublicintervention. Thesesitesoftenhave to be the remediated of hazards to human beings, groundwaterandecosystems, andneed to be put back to the propertymarket. Their design and mangement should be a circular ‘metabolism’ process, where consumption is reduced by implementing efficiencies and where re-use of resources is maximised.
