WHAT do the churches teach on this issue? The Catholic Church and the Church of England both agree that using animals for essential medical research is acceptable. Unnecessary research should not be done though. So if it is possible to develop new medicines using different research e.g. stem cells then the use of animals should be avoided. The CofE say “ we affirm that responsible stewardship of the natural world requires all animals to receive careful treatment” The Catholic Church agrees and so animals used for research must have any suffering kept to a minimum and their welfare must be considered. The churches are keen to take on the responsibility to care for the animals as God requires in Genesis 1, as well as taking the right to use them for our wellbeing. In an exam answer you must; Be careful to link the Christian views to the biblical teaching. Support any explanation of these views in a d) question by using Jesus example Decide how other people may disagree with the church teaching and their reasons for such views – this will help you to respond to a discussion question in a question e) Fact File– Medical Research Using Animals Does the Bible give us any EXAMPLES of Jesus using animals to heal people? There is only ONE occasion in the Bible in the book of Mark when Jesus uses animals to heal humans. In this story Jesus heals a man possessed by demons by sending the demons into a herd of pigs. The herd of pigs then die. This is an EXAMPLE that you MUST use when explaining Christian beliefs about using animals for medical research. EXPLAIN that Jesus obviously thought that it was acceptable to allow the animals to die in order to save the man. Therefore many Christians today would argue that essential medical research on animals is also acceptable. Starting Point – WHY do the Christians hold their views? Christians believe humans are God’s most important creation BECAUSE in Genesis 1 God blesses humans and tells them to rule over every other living creature. Humans have a soul unlike animals and so we are able to have a special relationship with God with Him living in us as “temples of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians) For these reasons Christians believe humans have the right to use animals for our benefit but the responsibility to care for them and not harm them unnecessarily.
