Role of GOs • Government Offices overall purpose is to work with national, regional and local partners to deliver central Government’s aims in the region: • to achieve high and stable levels of growth and employment, • to build a safe, inclusive and prosperous society that can develop in a sustainable way.
GOs represent ten central Government Departments • Department for Education and Skills • Department of Health • Department for Communities and Local Government • Department of Trade and Industry • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs • Home Office • The Cabinet Office • Department for Culture, Media and Sport • Department for Work and Pensions • Department for Transport

As far as the GO Children and Learners function is concerned, the DfES has identified four high level roles: • driving implementation of strategic change and new policy directions • ensuring effective management of programmes • supporting performance improvement • providing regional input to national policies and developing policies.
